A Florida man was arrested for having a nine-year-old drive kid him home in a car on Sunday. A Florida man was arrested for trying to have a nine-year-old drive him home in a car on Sunday. Alexander Berrios, 22, allegedly gave directions to the child, who had already driven around 3 miles, along the nearly 7-mile (11.2-km-long) trip, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “A witness spotted a car entering Oak Hill Road from a neighborhood around 8 a.m. yesterday and suspected the driver was impaired due to the vehicle being all over the roadway,” deputies explained the events in a statement.
“He cut off the car near the intersection of Highway 85 and Old Bethel Road and noticed a child was behind the wheel. He told the child to get in the passenger seat and pulled the car into a convenience store parking lot.”
The 9-year-old told deputies that Berrios had asked him to drive the car and even pointed out directions. However, the victim claimed that at the time of interception, he was on his way back to his own residence and had already driven 3 miles.
When questioned by investigators the day after, Berrios initially denied knowing the child or the child’s mother and went on to claim that he had been home all the while, according to an arrest report obtained by CBS affiliate WKRG. However, his alibi contradicted videographic evidence provided by his father that appears to show him entering his house just before 7:45 am.
The child’s mother told officers that he had been at their home the previous night drinking alcohol.
Berrios faces charges of child neglect without great bodily harm. "We want to express our sincere gratitude to the witness who noticed something was wrong and intervened, potentially preventing a tragedy involving a child," said county Sheriff Aden.
Last week, a Florida man made headlines for using his own one-year-old son as a human shield to resist cops.
I don’t understand why he did it. Was he too drunk to drive?
He was boozing the night before. It was probably still in his system, or he had a wicked headache/hangover.
‘Florida man’ at it again....
Perfect!
Costanza and/or Kramer can be used on most threads. :)
I got pretty baked at a family affair and had my (a littler overgrown in size) 14 yo son drive me home and we had a cop follow us for about 5 miles before he veered off.
That’s old enough with supervision. Though I have no kids, and can barely take care of myself...
“He denied knowing the child”
That very small article seems to contradict itself a couple of time. The story is kind of being told backwards.
My 11 year old granddaughter is learning to fly airplanes.
It’s legal as long as the person sitting next to her has a valid pilot’s license.
If they let illegal aliens drive, why not let 9-year-old boys drive?
It makes you realize that what most of us consider a mundane, automatic chore really requires some pretty intricate skills: Driving.
An old retired neighbor would take us fishing. As each of us come of age, at about 12, he'd ask us to "help" him hook up his boat trailer. He'd then drive it to the river to take us fishing and he'd have us 12 or so or older back the trailer into the water and launch the boat. Then after fishing we'd reload the boat onto the trailer. After he drove it home he'd have us "help" him by backing the trailer into his garage, disconnect the trailer, and store the fishing supplies.
That was back when it was cool to teach kids responsibility. I honored his memory by having each of my kids "help" me back trailers whenever we were on private property either at home or at church.
They’re likely more sober.
Nowadays kids won't even mow the lawn.
And give them a bottle of Jack......................
In the good old days you could do that and give the kid a road beer too!
Your comment made me recall when my daughter(now 38) pointed out that she had backed the John Deere lawn tractor into the shed. As opposed to pulling it in forward.
I told her I was very proud of her. She was 12 at the time and quite proud of herself.
Around the same time she wanted to be able to run her grand fathers dingy(for his sailboat)around the harbor. I took her out and let her run it. The I pulled the kill switch on the outboard motor. I told her IF she could restart the motor by herself, then she could take the dingy out by herself. She was very small for her age. She did not have the strength to pull the cord well enough. It took her several more trips with me, but by the end of the summer she could start the engine all by herself.
drinking alcohol! OMG!!! Like there’s any other way to go about embracing democrat suck.
