Music video by Sammy Hagar performing I Can't Drive 55. (C) 1984 Geffen Records

In 1974, the federal government passed the National Maximum Speed Law, which restricted the maximum permissible vehicle speed limit to 55 miles per hour (mph) on all interstate roads in the United States.1 The law was a response to the 1973 oil embargo, and its intent was to reduce fuel consumption.

I am sharing this on social media too. Looking for the Jimmy Carter chats about thermostats etc. LOL. Maybe not so much time as we know we could be energy independent ...ASAP.

When the National Maximum Speed Law was passed in 1973 it killed the American Muscle Car.

When doing your Carter research, look for his discussion of the importance of sweaters.

I wonder if we will have ongoing reports about how thermostats are set in the white House, Congress, and other Federal buildings.

The glowbullists aren’t stopping there though; they want to lower billions of us ‘useless eaters’ to room temp.

I remember when Obama became president, the White House temperature in the winter was 72 degrees or higher.

Obama’s flunkie press secretary, Robert Gibbs, said that Obama was from Hawaii and likes it warm. There was no concern about global warming and those issues when setting the thermostat in the Obama White House.

“its intent was to reduce fuel consumption”

If you ask most folks today, certainly not to include well-informed Freepers, they won’t know that fact.

They believe it was all about speed limits and “Safety”.

What was it set at in summer?

There’s a certain contingent of people for whom 68F in the summer isn’t cold enough and for whom 72F in the winter isn’t warm enough.

They are most frequently found in situations where someone else is paying the energy bills.

If they lower speed limits, they need to tear up all the four lane highways so crops can be planted to cover the coming food shortage.

“The law was a response to the 1973 oil embargo, and its intent was to reduce fuel consumption.”

And THIS time the law will be in response to Brandon draining our Strategic Oil Reserves! *SPIT*

As a life-long Van Halen fan, I was pleasantly surprised when Sammy Hagar showed up (to replace David Lee Roth) with ‘Why Can’t This Be Love?’

The National Maximum Speed Law was President Nixon’s worst accomplishment. Although it was unpopular, even Ronald Reagan couldn’t get rid of it. He vetoed a bill that ould have repealed it because the bill was too full of pork. It took a Democrat, Bill Clinton, to finally do away with it.

Carter was a disaster, but 55 was signed into law by Nixon.
