Listening to a few Rick Beato features like the link above - Episode 91 with Joni Mitchell.

Whether it's the top 20 guitar solos or it's this piece discussing Joni Mitchell it becomes obvious that from folk to metal to rock to county we have some brilliant musicians. They understand theory, phrasing, poetry, art.

Every aspiring musician that grabs a guitar and starts playing has to realize the complexity of music and the genius of some of these musicians from Larry Carlton to John Bonham.

From the Rapper Million $$ Bill....

Kill the Rapper, Kill him dead
Shoot the brother in the head
Crush his throat with his gold chain
Watch the video of his pain.
Hate the bastard, the illigit
Mouthing nonsense, verbal shit

The story here that we must tell
Let the sob rot in hell

To be clear, "Rap is Crap" is your headline, not Rick Beato's. There is some rap Rick has liked, and he's done some features on it. I personally can't stand it, but he doesn't condemn all of it.

What he seems to dislike the most is derivative, over-produced pop.

Sometime around the advent of Rap Gregg Allman was asked about Rap music and said "You left off the "C" , so the saying has been out there a while.

regardingSouthern Rock he said.

"Rock ‘n roll was born in the South. It’s like saying rock-rock."

Progressive rock seems to fare much better among reactors than it does among casual listeners because it requires active listening, and that's exactly what reactors do.

It's also funny to watch any female reacting to Bobby Hatfield singing Unchained Melody. Regardless of age, race, whatever, the reactions are all the same.

Not only is it garbage, I believe it damages the soul.

"rap was put on a pedestal as some sort of reparations."

That's pretty much it. They had to create roles for young blacks to inhabit, since "lawyer" and "doctor" are pretty much out of reach.

Now TMZ is literally 24/7, "Rapper dies in shootout", well, who? Someone who shouted ebonics over a subsonic bass line jumping on a stolen car on TikTok? The pathos is palpable.

Rap is not music. It is made up just like Kwanza and Juneteenth.
See any connection?

Sure, he doesn't want to be condemned for totally ignoring it, he's a smart guy. Society puts alot of pressure on musicians, who generally are quite liberal, which is why we now see so many pairing of groups with the rapper.

And then there was Tom Petty’s critique of modern country music:

“Bad rock with a fiddle.”

Here's the best rap song ever written and it is brilliant...Eminem - Lose Yourself

It's as inspiring as the Rocky theme.

Musical poetry.

"Rock ‘n roll was born in the South. It's like saying rock-rock."

I wouldn't necessarily dispute that. And that was when there were some incredibly talented Black musicians.

Beato is a very interesting guy. He is very knowledgeable with an incredible ear. The only problem I have with his analyses are his championing of 90’s grunge. 90’s grunge is just god awful. His takes on it are rather surprising.

Our house has been under reconstruction for about a year...with many contractors who ask if they can play music...I always say “yes, as long as it is not rap”...I will even listen to Mexican over that crap.

I am no fan of rap, or punk, or techno, or disco.

But I recognize some of it has some merit. I liked some Snoop and Eminem back in the day.

Music is one of those things where your “life experience” and culture has a lot to do with your likes and dislikes.

That’s a good point.

I remember the 1970s and people sitting for long stretches and listening to progressive rock. Yes, drugs were often involved. “Listening to music” was considered an activity.

Today, it seems that music is a soundtrack to your life. It’s like people are living in a movie. I walk down the street, and music plays. I cook a meal, and music plays. Hey, I don’t actually listen to any of it. Why would I do that? It’s just there. I don’t want to think about it. Music isn’t important. It’s just “there”.

And much of today’s music (I’m talking Pop, not Rap) is mostly a back beat. With a big voice (often a powerful female voice) belting out repetitive lyrics. People don’t listen, because there isn’t much to really listen to. It’s just supposed to be “there”.

That’s a completely different approach to music than in decades past.
