Listening to a few Rick Beato features like the link above - Episode 91 with Joni Mitchell.
Whether it's the top 20 guitar solos or it's this piece discussing Joni Mitchell it becomes obvious that from folk to metal to rock to county we have some brilliant musicians. They understand theory, phrasing, poetry, art.
Every aspiring musician that grabs a guitar and starts playing has to realize the complexity of music and the genius of some of these musicians from Larry Carlton to John Bonham.

Love Beato’s videos.
Yep, as soon as they started playing that crap on the radio, I stopped listening to FM radio. Every few years I would tune in again, and if I heard it still playing I would turn off the radio again for a few more years.
It’s been about 15 years now total. Recently starting listening to Christian Rock radio stations. It’s like pop love ballads from the 80’s and 90’s with Godly lyrics.
When musicians were really musicians.
One of the YouTube “genres” seems to be “Reaction videos”.
Often, this is a young person (or more than one) watching a movie like “Star Wars” or “The Lord of the Rings” or whatnot. It can be fun to see someone be shocked to discover the identity of Luke’s father.
But many reaction videos concern music. And it seems that a number of reactors are Rap fans who have never listened to anything other than Rap. But, for their YouTube channel, they sit and listen to ... Joni Mitchell, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Emerson Lake and Palmer, there are many options here over the past 60+ years.
And the Rap fans are always shocked to hear real music and they like it.
It’s just kids being kids. Are rap “mixtapes” really that different than say street corner Doo Wop from the 1950’s? That said I’m not a fan of rap.
One of my favorites thank you.
What, you don't find shouting about murdering a HO inspiring?
I agree with Sam Kinison’s opinion on rap:
“So, I bought my very first rap album the other day. 2 Live Crew.
Ya wanna know what that felt like?
Okay, take a twenty dollar bill out of your wallet, and wipe your a$$ with it. THAT’S how it felt.”
I would say very different. Doo Wop was musical.
you got the shouting part right! because is certainly is not singing!
Anytime, it’s an amazing song.
I feel so sorry for what these people have been tricked into believing.
lol. Remove harmony and melody. Remove singing. Remove the playing of instruments. ...what do you have? Rap.
When there is ‘a beat’ and some sort of musical track...it is almost always the reuse of something created by an actual band.
Sure, it is a form of ‘art’. The lowest common denominator, all you need is a microphone and some rhymes. Is there talent? Sure. Are most rappers talented to the point of deserving accolades? Nope.
I’ve been watching some “reaction videos” on YT. Many are black people reacting to songs from the 80’s. Actual bands. Actually playing instruments with actual music. What is interesting is that there tends to be two types of reactions. One is where they realize just how talented these folks must have been. The other is where they’re not even listening to the music and only judge based on ‘the bars’ (lyrics). They’re only listening to the words....because that is what they know, with no appreciation of the talent in the music.
Scarface from the Geto Boys.
Scarface was Upgrayedd from Idiocracy.
There's "talent" on the little league baseball diamond too.
It was funny though that they got the real Michael Bolton to film that scene with him rapping in the car.
