Sometime around the advent of Rap Gregg Allman was asked about Rap music and said "You left off the "C" , so the saying has been out there a while.

regardingSouthern Rock he said.

"Rock ‘n roll was born in the South. It’s like saying rock-rock."

I wouldn't necessarily dispute that. And that was when there were some incredibly talented Black musicians.
