How long older adults will live comes down to 17 often surprising factors (Cancer & heart disease not key)
Medical Xpress / Duke University / eBioMedicine ^ | Sept. 29, 2022 | Alexis Porter / Virginia Byers Kraus et al

A new model to predict the life expectancy of older people relies less on their specific disease diagnoses and more on factors such as the ability to grocery shop, the amount of certain small cholesterol particles circulating in their blood, and whether they never or only occasionally smoked.

The findings provide a way to predict whether a person over the age of 70 is likely to live two, five or 10 years.

"This study was designed to determine the proximal causes of longevity—the factors that portend whether someone is likely to live two more years or 10 more years," said Virginia Byers Kraus, M.D., Ph.D..

Kraus and colleagues launched their inquiry at an opportune time, having been directed to a cache of 1,500 blood samples from a 1980s longitudinal study that enrolled older people.

The researchers were able to delve into health factors to identify a core set of 17 predictive variables that have a causal impact on longevity.

The analysis found that a leading factor associated with longevity across each of the study's benchmarks—two-, five- and 10-years after participants had their blood drawn—was physical function, which was defined as an ability to go grocery shopping or perform housecleaning chores. Surprisingly, having cancer or heart disease was not among the main predictors.

For older people living two years beyond the time their blood had been drawn, the leading factor associated with longevity was having an abundance of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol—and not just any HDL lipids, but high volumes of very small HDL particles.

At five years beyond the original blood draw, just being of a younger age was predictive of longevity, along with cognitive function. And among the longest survivors—those living 10 years—the best predictor was a person's smoking history, with non-smokers faring best.

For the rest of us in a “near” state of ketosis, you fart a lot and are always hungry.

I'm so there, but not as far along as my dog...

Right now we’re watching a sermon by Charles Stanley on his 90th birthday), “How To Stay Young And Useful All Your Life”, about aging well. It’s so pertinent to this thread.

Keep learning
Keep loving
Keep laughing
Keep leaving (your cares behind)
Keep longing (dream about your future)
Keep looking (your best)
Keep laboring
Keep leaning (rely upon the Lord)
Keep listening (to God)

It’s very good. There’s an “In Touch” app on smart TVs.

“You’re young and useful at any age if you’re planning for tomorrow.”

My dad just passed away—at age 96.

He smoked cigars all his life, ate whatever he wanted to (including every “bad” food out there) and had a very high stress job for decades.

He would have really messed up this study.

;-)

It sounds as if you’re gonna be a burden to the hard working people of America (at least the few that are still working) for many years to come. ;-)

Playing in the water, yes. In my family, it’s a rule. If the baby’s out of sorts, give baby a bath. This seems to work for the first ninety years or so.
Not everyone can afford an indoor pool or a fancy tub, but I would think a good shower with a buddy can’t hurt you or your wallet.
Water, it’s man’s first toy.

I don’t think Clint is quite that old yet, or there would be a big fuss on the news about him hitting the centennial mark. He continues to begin each day as an active and creative artist. I wish the best for your friend now being treated for cancer. He has the advantage of being loved by you.

‘Have you noticed how many successful, professional musicians seem to live for a long time?’

you left out both Keith Richard and his even harder partier Ron Woods...

Oh, that’s right. The Rolling Stones still touring. Ive heard that Mick has a strict exercise routine to stay limber, just as one would expect him to have.

With his wealth, Mick could pay most any fitness coach to travel with the group and be available to crack the proverbial whip at the crack of dawn if need be. That, living on the road is a Gypsys life. Not for most people.

Nonsense.

Last Thursday and Friday my high school class of 1960 had a party celebrating out 80th birth days. We are all 80 or soon will be. We have very good contact with the class members and know about all but a very small number of our class mates.

We missed out 60th reunion because of Covid

A total of 60 % are alive and kicking around.

Having talked to many, my view is that longevity is a function of excellent medical care. There are of course other factors, but very high quality medical care is a primary contributor to longevity

I’ve been doing an Over 55 yoga class fro 2 years and am now in better shape than when I turned 40 and was doing Tai Kwan Do.
Actually I feel so good I feel like living to 90 is a very real possibility.

Cancer from smoking?

That takes too long. The vaxxxxxxines light up cancer like nothing else. I heard one prediction that the vaxxxxxines will lower life expectancy from the 70’s down to the 50’s.

Bill Gates and Fauci can’t stop smiling.

I wasn’t making an argument against a healthful diet or regular exercise. Diet and exercise are important. I agree that a poor diet could make you sick. But, in the end, genetics are the determining factor in life span.

“grocery shop, the amount of certain small cholesterol particles circulating in their blood, and whether they never or only occasionally smoked”

calling one factor “grocery shop” was just stupid, when the true factor in their study was “physical function” - meaning getting up and having daily physical activity beyond just sitting in a chair

paraphrasing that as “grocery shop” is very dumb

Yep. We should take good care of ourselves, but, in the end, our genes pretty much determine our fate.
