Escobar, who spent the bulk of his NFL career with the Cowboys, was only 31 years old

Former NFL tight end Gavin Escobar was one of two people found dead, at Idyllwild, Calif., on Wednesday after a rock climbing accident, according to USA Today. He was only 31 years old.

Per the report, firefighters found the bodies of Escobar and 33-year-old Chelsea Walsh in the San Bernardino National Forest after a climbing accident was reported around noon, local time. Escobar and Walsh were reportedly climbing a rock face (the vertical surface of a rock). Rain and thunderstorms passed through the area prior to the accident, though it's unclear whether they played a role in the incident. The extent of Escobar and Walsh's rock climbing experience is also unclear

A second-round pick of the Cowboys in the 2013 NFL Draft, Escobar played four seasons for Dallas before ending his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens in 2017. He recorded 30 catches and eight touchdowns over that stretch, all with the Cowboys.

After his NFL career, Escobar joined the fire department at Long Beach, Calif. The department paid its respects shortly after Escobar's tragic death.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the off-duty death of Long Beach Firefighter Gavin Escobar. Hired on February 5, 2022, Firefighter Escobar was assigned to Fire Station 3 on B-shift," read a social media post from the department. "Firefighter Escobar leaves behind his wife and two young children."

Kind of like when I had to end motorcycling for many years.

Ditto - The Colonel’s (back then, the Captain’s) Wife said, “I’m pregnant!”, followed closely by, “Sell the Yamaha!”...

Well, I’m not one, my grandfather, my uncle (mom’s brother) myself and my grandson all drive or drove race cars. I’m 65 and the older ones all died of natural causes.

I also have hunted the wild areas of the world from Alaska to Africa, raced motocross, showed cutting horses, and a competitive shooter with shotguns and handguns. I like competition.

At some point - say, when you’re married with kids - you have to stop doing some recreational activities that involve taking potentially fatal risks.

This is true. When I was a young buck I did a lot of rafting, hiking and fishing in dangerous places. Had loads of fun. Once I had children......I said I'm done.

Don't climb any rocks that you would have trouble picking up and lifting.

RIP, intrepid climbers.

“I’m 65 and the older ones all died of natural causes.”

Several thoughts. Not everybody who takes risks is equally talented or strong. Unfortunately, those on the left side of the normal distribution don’t know what their limitations are until it is too late. (Sounds like you’ve had an awesome life.) Nor is everyone smart enough to know what they shouldn’t do. I’m thinking of the guy who jumped off a three-story building wearing a set of bat-like wings that you sometimes see on people doing a hi-lo jump. (Yep, he was a Darwin winner.)

There used to be to be this commercial trying to get people to pick various sports stars for their fantasy team. The star would do something amazing and then say, “Pick me.” One of them dove through the open back windows of a large SUV, clearing both sides in one jump. He’d do a roll and pop up with the “pick me” statement. Another had someone throw a football while he was on the other side of a wall covered with wallboard. He yelled, “Now!” the helper through the football at the wall and he slammed his hand through and caught it. (Always wondered how many takes that took.) My point is there are people who are physically talented and those who simply think they are. You’re probably in the talented normal distribution.

Risk taking and success are somewhat connected. It was for our forefathers as it is for us.

It doesn't mean we will necessarily die young. I was a 10k runner, scuba diver, mountain trekker, skydiver, world traveler, and off-road explorer. I am over 80 years old as are many of my friends.

I’ve lived a lot and still am. I’m not done yet, we’ll be running my car tonight with my grandson at the wheel!

By the way I am not too old to drive one and win either. I’ve been blessed with good genetics, don’t take a prescription, run and lift 5 days a week and weight 2 pounds more than when I was playing college baseball.
