Before her third consecutive double shift at a pizzeria last year, Grace Velez pulled her hair, which fell past her waist, into pigtails. Ms. Velez says she was used to inappropriate comments from customers, but what she experienced that day shocked her.
Regulars who usually never tipped put money in the pizzeria’s tip jar. A few older men winked at Ms. Velez, 21, as they dropped in cash. Another man, who Ms. Velez guessed was in his 30s, tried to flirt with her for 10 minutes before asking her whether she was a high school student.
About halfway through her shift, the University of North Florida student began to suspect that it was her pigtails that made her tips double. She typically made $45 to $75 in tips during double shifts, but she earned $140 that day. On a whim, she made a TikTok about what had happened.
“It’s something that you notice, and then you never unsee it,” Ms. Velez said. “It drew a lot of attention to the fact that young women are definitely fetishized.”
The TikTok post was viewed 1.4 million times, and comments streamed in from others who had similar experiences.
“i do it because it’s such an easy hairstyle when i forgot to put up my hair but i’m always getting hit on by older men and now it makes sense,” one commenter wrote.
“Wait this makes me nervous I didn’t think ab that one time I wore two braid pigtails cuz I was running late and got a 15 dollar tip that night????” said another.
When Bella Woodard saw Ms. Velez’s TikTok and others commenting about how “tiptails” brought in extra cash, Ms. Woodard decided to try it herself.

As for the pigtails, there may be a tie-in with Japanese anime. Anime creeps me out.

$60/day in tips typically. That is $8/hour. Is that factored in to the poor low minimum wage workers? $15/hour minimum plus $8/hour tips = $23/hour or $45,000 per year to sling pizza.
Long hair inna restaurant is a health hazard. Look at the guys in the back — they are wearing nets.
Pigtails and braids look cute, and are healthier. If some guy tips them, fine. If someone thinks that is a sign of predatory behavior, they are probably ugly.

I guess I met the first criteria back in my cocktail waitress days. But not the 2nd criteria, and my lack of tips compared to friendly girls showed it.
Customer drops napkin on purpose so he can goose the waitress.
Friendly waitress: “Oh, you naughty Rooster. I better keep an eye on you.”
Sockmonkey waitress: “I’m not picking that up. Pick it up yourself you pervert bastard.”
Once a customer put his hand on my belt buckle. Automatic reaction: I stabbed him through his hand with my very sharp pencil. Yep, all the way through it.
He was shocked. “You bastard, you stabbed me. I’m going to have you arrested.”
Sockmonkey waitress: “You touched my belt buckle.”
My boss, a great guy, threw him out.
In working with her, I was very surprised that she was single! We chatted about how I had a mutual friend in Russell Johnson on Bainbridge Island and she gushed "Oh, I so would have married him! We were always best friends!" I thought it was a very special thing to hear as, when I was a kid, I thought their characters should have married. Ha!

Luckily, Natalie had Dawn to take care of her at the very end. It was nice to learn how most of the actors were as close as the characters.

Sure, because pulling your hair into 2 pigtails that you have to make sure look even is much easier than just pulling it into one ponytail.
See, nowadays they got “water bras” so even the non-busty waitresses can get those “cleavage” bonus tips.
Dawn was living in Driggs and came to Pocatello to shop for a new SUV. She expressed an interest in an ice blue 2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid at Courtesy Ford.
