‘Complete and Total Disaster:’ Ford Electric Truck Utterly Fails YouTuber’s Towing Test

(I'm just the poster, not the tester)

A YouTuber with 1.4 million followers attempted to tow a 1930 Ford Model A truck with his brand new 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck, but it ended in “a complete and total disaster.” “If a truck towing 3,500 pounds can’t even go 100 miles — that is ridiculously stupid,” Tyler “Hoovie” Hoover says in his video. “This truck can’t do normal truck things. You would be stopping every hour to recharge, which would take about 45 minutes a pop, and that is absolutely not practical.”

“This is my new 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck,” YouTuber Tyler “Hoovie” Hoover said in a video in which he tests the electric truck’s towing capabilities, which resulted in “a complete and total disaster.”

That post of yours is completely and appropriately going to get pulled, but that is what many of us are silently thinking if we are forced to buy EVs.

Have you seen the youtube discussions regarding EV long haul trucks. They easily demonstrate the lunacy of the whole concept - at least with current tech.

Now, if they could come up with a battery that weighed 1/10 of what current batteries do, and have five times the range, THEN you might have something. But we’re not there yet.

Umpossible. Government math proves the engineering is good.

I see EV’s being situationally practical. An EV golf cart, completely practical. A cheap EV vehicle for in town errands, practical. But as a workhorse, for distance drives, back country... not practical.

I agree. EV's have their uses. I plan to eventually get one for my wife for "around-town" errands. She can just plug it in at night and not worry about pulling into gas stations (which she hates), getting oil changes, tuneups and all those other mechanical things that most women are horrible about keeping on top of.

No way however are EV's useful as a working pickup truck. What the hell was Ford thinking? Then again, a lot of F-150 owners never even get the truck bed dirty. Maybe that was their target demographic.

ROFL!!!

I bet the Model A pulling the F150 goes more than 100 miles. AND its energy storage device is easier to recharge.

I was listening to a motel owner talking about EVs, and they said something like “If I have 50 rooms, do I have to get 50 charging stations, or supply cords or outlets in each parking space? What do they expect me to do?”

I admit I had not thought of that. I’ll bet the big brains did.

Or maybe it will just be “acceptable collateral damage”.

As long as you have a charge, pulling power is not an issue. Electric motors have amazing torque.

He should try towing his Ford Lightning with his Model A to see how far it will tow it.

It depends on the Model A. This one was upgraded and has a 302ci engine and 350 hp. It should do just fine.

What makes you think the elite in this country will allow you to own a boat. Remember “You will own nothing, and be happy.” Maybe this is why the elites are pushing EVs. No long distance travel except by bus or train, no pulling of boats etc. Once all the EV rules go into effect, the elites will be able to buy boats, second or even third homes and they will have the means to get there. The rules regarding EV ownership is for thee not for me (elitist).

I know Hoovie and bought a car from him earlier this year . He been fixing and selling cars since he was 12 so he knows what he’s talking about.

If anyone knows Hoovies Garage then you know the CAR WIZARD.

IF there was no climate emergency

EVs would be irrational

THERE IS NO CLIMATE EMERGENCY!

I think the future of electric vehicles is going to be hybrid.

Gas engines have an optimal ‘idle’ speed and is great for giving good gas mileage if you can gear up to cruise at that speed, Electrics are better at Acceleration (and can recover electricity on deceleration!)

Mom has an EV golf cart modeled like a ‘57 Chevy that goes 60mph

She uses it to tool around the neighborhood

Absolutely. It is why diesel locomotives use the diesels to run electric motors instead of the diesel powering the locomotive directly.

I had a Tesla pull up next to me at a light this morning, and when it turned green, that car screwed. Really took off.

Except for the battery/charging part, I see huge advantages in maintenance and performance.

Of course, that is like saying “Except for that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?”

Look at the advantages of jet engines over reciprocating engines. I think reciprocating engines are just great, and nothing sounds as muscular (Okay, perhaps a Tomcat taking off in full afterburner is pretty cool sounding too) but a jet engine is so much more reliable than a reciprocating engine. Granted, more expensive and more complicated in some ways, but to keep it going, you pretty much just have to keep spitting fuel into the combustion chambers and it will go on and on.

Those advanced radial engines at the peak of their development in the B-29 and B-36 were massive and powerful, but...they sure did have maintenance problems. Lots and lots of moving parts.

Should have bought one with the tow package. It includes a solar panel amd wind tirbine that will extend his total range an additional .01 miles.

No, the 150 in F-150 is the number of minutes between recharges.

It’s not a torque/power issue...and for all the comments here, it’s a battery issue. Over time will likely improve.

IMHO...it’s only a matter of meeting your application. I went to all (56v) battery powered garden tools; lawnmower, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, edge trimmer, snow blower, leaf blower. It wasn’t to “be green”. With two chargers and 4 batteries I’m never without a battery to get things done. As I work other batteries charge within 45min.

I usually have 3 cars, one for around town. I can see that becoming an EV - it meets the application.

It would seem that the only way to make EVs practical would be to have exchangeable battery units at every charging station.

Driver would pull in, exchange a unit, pay a rental fee, and drive off. Of course, that is wrought with problems, too.

A 45-minute recharge every 100 miles is impractical.

All of the points made here are good but unfortunately moot

Under the elitist plan, the masses will not be able to afford EVs

and because gas cars are banned, the masses will not be able to afford personal transportation

its on the bus you will go while the elites tool around in their EVs and even gas cars(there will be exceptions, there always are)

The electrical grid will never be able to handle all of the EVs in the same number as gas cars currently on the road

And as they continue to move towards “green energy” it will become prohibitively expensive except for the rich and powerful

But you will not be worried about any of that because you will be burning the dining room furniture to keep from freezing to death

as your electric bill exceeds your mortgage/rent as your largest monthly bill
