Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson announced in a message to all employees that 11% of its workforce would be laid off, stating that they made the layoffs through an "Anti-Racist" and "Anti-Oppression" lens.
The San Francisco-based corporate communications company CEO said in the message to employees that the layoffs are "wise and necessary."
"I'm not going to sugarcoat things. A layoff is the last thing we want to do, but I believe it's wise and necessary. Twilio has grown at an astonishing rate over the past couple years. It was too fast, and without enough focus on our most important company priorities. I take responsibility for those decisions, as well as the difficult decision to do this layoff," Lawson said.
In determining which roles would be impacted in the layoffs, Lawson said that company officials examined which roles were most aligned with its four priorities, but said that the layoffs were carried out through an anti-racism lens.
"As you all know, we are committed to becoming an Anti-Racist/Anti-Oppression company," Lawson wrote. "Layoffs like this can have a more pronounced impact on marginalized communities, so we were particularly focused on ensuring our layoffs – while a business necessity today – were carried out through an Anti-Racist/Anti-Oppression lens."
Those who were laid-off will get "at least" 12 weeks of pay, and an additional week per year of service at the company. They will also receive the full value of Twilio's next stock vest.
The company had 7,867 employees as of Dec. 31, 2021, according to its December annual report.
In the past year, Twilio shares have declined in value by over 78%.

Before their stock crashed, their best skill appeared to be exchanging hyper-inflated Twilio stock for small companies that created open source software products that were available on AWS (Amazon Web Services).
Twilio's first product was a phone-over-AWS product - in 2008, I think.

Yep, what I always thought is if they are so concerned about racism and reject all symbols of racism, then why do they fanatically support the democrap party? The party of slavery, the KKK, Jim Crow, lynchings, segregation, the confederacy? Their hypocrisy is off the charts.

They were shocked how many valuable people left rather than deal with what was coming.
It nearly sank the company.
The new CEO is doing a fair job recovering from this disaster but only time will tell.

My institution was doing layoffs from 2015-2020 and the word was passed no minorities will be laid off period no matter who unneeded or sorry at their job they may be. It caused lots of anger which wasn’t voiced openly but its still simmering. The one thing the institution did do right was lay off a lot of problem children when it had the chance it just was an affirmative action layoff which still doesn’t set well with those remaining.
Let’s be honest. When a ship is obviously sinking like this one is, you want to be one of the first ones off, while the company can still afford to be generous.
Hmmm. Maybe he is doing this purposely to payoff his white employees and leave the minorities SOL when the company crashes and burns.
They’ll layoff a handful of African-Americans just to muddy the issue in case this gets a class-act challenge in the courts. But, ‘YES’, that is what they are planning...

Not really.
Their IPO stock got a lot of hype because several well known venture capitalists invested in the company before it went public.
Then, in 2020, because of Covid, many Internet focused stocks had huge price increases because they were viewed as stay-at-home stocks.
That meant Twilio could issue new stock and use it to buy other companies. When your stock is going up like a rocket, many business owners are eager to sell their companies.
However, when your stock crashes 80% in 18 months, that means all those former business owners now want to kill you!
“We will racistly lay off Whites, in other words.”
If he’s smart, he will use the opportunity to lay off the most left-wing whites on his staff, while leaving them with no ideologically-acceptable way to protest the layoffs.
“You want us to lay off more people of color to save your job? How RACIST of you!”
Now divide the stock price in that chart by CPI to adjust for inflation and you will see the truth -- it is worth less today than it was 5 years ago.
So, whites are getting fired because of racism.
