Share the things you do to combat food inflation.
When I made it in the past, I used the sauerkraut in the plastic bag in the deli bin. Never canned. Put the chops in the bottom of a cast iron skillet, covered them with kraut, and baked in the oven. Don’t recall what temp or how long.
By marrying a woman with some OCD issues around food and who doesn't like to eat anything she didn't prepare herself.
Saves me a fortune on dining bills (though once in a while I will sneak out and enjoy a "table for one" at a local restaurant).
Okay, so not canned but plastic bag or maybe jar okay. ALDI has shredded kraut in a glass jar that says “German Inspired” which I’ve put on bratwursts before. I could imagine it going really nicely with a pork chop.
Yes. Perfect. In a glass jar is good.
I recall that when Mom made this she baked them for quite a long time so the meat and kraut flavors melded together.
Sounds wonderful, though I may cut a corner and let chewing action do the melding of flavors :)
I’m having visions of a perfect pork chop intermingling with a mound of jarred kraut on a plate and it’s making my stomach rumble...
I hate eating this way. I’d love a breakfast with a ton of home fries with chopped onions, a little brown and crispy, but not burned.
And I’d like a big slice of lasagne all gooey on top with cheese.
I shop at Kroger using their deals and coupons, which also gives me gas points. I shop a lot at Dollar General also using their coupons. I buy fresh veggies and make casseroles such as squash, zucchini, with mushrooms (topped with cheese). Dishes such as that can last for two dinner meals.
Although, I have to admit that with just me and hubby, we can make it on a lot less than a large family and I do not cook as much as I used to. Sandwiches are usually what we have for lunch. When the grandkids come to visit, I make sure I have their favorites on hand so that is the only thing that increases my grocery budget.
In addition, we have a nearby local store that has it’s own meat section and they cut up their own meat and package it so it’s cheaper. Other than that, I’m losing weight. I’m on the “Venezuelan” diet plan.
I have a feeling we are ALL going to be on the Venezuelan diet plan VERY SOON!! I honestly don’t know how people with teenage boys in the household are managing I HATE walking into a grocery store as of late!! I used to LOVE going to the grocery store I LOVE to cook so used to love wandering around the specialty items!! Today I DREAD just walking in the door!!
Yes. Grocery shopping is now a chore. You are no longer using your imagination for an amazing meal. Instead, you are using your imagination for an edible meal you can enjoy. Soup season is almost here. Be looking now for veggies you can freeze to use for soups. They do not have to be pretty.
Cook a beef roast on one day for dinner. Take the left-over roast and shred, then add a large can of tomato juice and a few veggies, and throw in your spices. Cook a pan of cornbread (really easy to do from scratch). You know have a filling meal for the next day.
pot roast is perhaps my favorite meal, and if you use a good chuck roast or 7 blade roast, its hard to mess up....the gravy is to die for.....
trying keto too...have lost weight and blood sugars are better....
I find that not eating constant snacks saves money and pounds.
Sure I get hungry by the end of the day, the body produces hormones to signal that, but I've learned that hunger doesn't necessarily mean I need to eat something. For me, the point of eating is to take in the nutrition my body needs, and not simply to make hunger go away for awhile, or because I'm a bit bored and eating will occupy my hands and time.
I did buy two but my husband says we have a lot already and our 4 freezers are nearly all full....
I never crossed the street for a rotisserie chicken UNTIL my wife made some chicken shawarma wraps with them...OMG, yum!
Absolutely!
After I put a roast in the crock pot I poir a can of French onion soup over it. Then I make a mixture of dry ingredients: envelope of dry brown gravy mix, envelope of dry ranch dressing, envelope of dry Italian dressing. Pat it all over the roast, and cook for on high for about 6 hours. Yummy gravy.
If you want taters, carrots, etc., Put them in after about the first four hours.
You can start with a frozen roast and cook longer.
While I understand the allure of a nice Peruvian or Honduran vintage of cocaine (and I particularly appreciate the 1972 whites, it was a good year), I find that methamphetamine is far more practical. Just a few lithium-ion batteries, some anhydrous ammonia, and a few car batteries (for their battery acid), and you can cook up a quick and effective appetite suppressant.

Absolutely! I never get tired of a good pot roast.
