The Apple Pie Topping That Divides Our Nation
the take out ^
Posted on 09/14/2022 12:08:16 PM PDT by mylife
Seeking an excuse to eat some apple pie this fall, I decided to write about one of the things that’s been a mystery to me since moving to Vermont about a decade ago: cheddar cheese on apple pie. I had no idea that investigating this custom would be a headfirst dive into a pool of stark division.
People have strong feelings about cheddar cheese on apple pie. In a recent, very unscientific poll I conducted among my own social media followers, 45% of responders said they’ve never had cheddar cheese on their apple pie—and they never will. Meanwhile, 21% said they love it, and 30% said they’ve never had it, but they’re curious.

I was just trying to remember which restaurant had that on their place mats. I think it was Marie Callendar’s.

I remember that old rhyme. My mother (from Iowa) used to say it, except that sometimes she’d change it to “like the kiss without the sneeze”.

I remember going to a restaurant with my grandparents and grandpa would order app;e pie for dessert with a slice of cheddar cheese on top, btw I’m 80. The first time I tried it was the early ‘50s. I still eat it like that sometimes — I know what’s for dessert tonight.

In Wisconsin, Apple Pie is served with Cheddar Cheese. Nobody messes with the, ‘Apple Pie Cheddar Cartel’ I tells ya! NOBODY!
That's true, and part of the reason we had to move out of Edgerton, WI. I was told I was risking jail. I DO like the fact that by law restaurants must default to butter rather than spread, even Kentucky Fried Chicken. The only place I saw violating the rule was the DOT lunch room.

My favorite topping on any pie is whipped cream.
That works too, ESPECIALLY a warm pecan pie.

As long a it’s REAL ice cream from REAL Wisconsin dairy cows, I approve.
See if you can find custard-style ice cream near you. You’ll never go back to ice cream. ;)

Let’s start a bitter and prolonged argument about it, what do you say? :)

I don’t think I’d be a very entertaining combatant.
I don’t like cheese on apple pie - I’m a member of the whipped cream tribe :-)

Ice cream for the win. But if someone gives me apple pie with cheese on it - as long as there’s nothing weird going on like sardines or whatever, of course - I would politely accept.

That’s how I feel about pimento cheese sandwiches, ubiquitous at Southerners’ parties.
Gulp them down and pretend you like them. Don’t praise them vociferously, though - they’ll just send you home with some, and make extra for the next time you visit.

You’re saying it here. And the Southerners can read it.

It’s like how cats know if you don’t like cats. So they sit on your lap anyway (unless in a field situation).

I think the cats sense uneasiness, and are compelled to try and ameliorate it.
Actually very like the polite Southerners, in my experience.
