Earlier this year, Denver City Council passed a property ordinance that requires all rental houses, units and apartments to be licensed. The deadline for some landlords is around the corner and the FOX31 Problem Solvers are finding out that only 1% of owners have complied.
Eric Escudero, spokesperson for Denver’s Department of Excise and Licenses said they’re concerned about a “slow” and “disappointing” start.
“There are obviously a lot of people who are procrastinating to get this required licensing to be a landlord in the city and county of Denver,” Escudero said.
The city council passed the “Healthy Residential Rentals for All” legislation, requiring landlords to have rental properties licensed with the city, spearheaded by Council President Stacie Gilmore.

Before all the regulating, America used to have boarding houses and flop houses.
Most people have seen a movie with a house converted into bedrooms and the owner cooking meals for the boarders.
I think the alien in The Day the Earth Stood Still stayed in one.

Stacie and the council have spoken.
So let it be written!
So let it be done!
Shaboom!
I’d rather have a sharp stick in the eye than to either register a rental or live in Denver.

How is the City ever going to enforce this? They don’t have the money, bureaucracy, or legal power to do this.
I could see the FEDS trying to do this. They have the statist/fascist power to force more compliance. But not a city.

Overnight/short-term rentals should be licensed. The guy renting out Mom’s house to help support her in the nursing home, no.

“Healthy Residential Rentals for All” legislation...Okay, but that is how the feds took control of the hospital systems - those had to be licensed in order to receive federal funds. Then when they receive federal funds, the systems have to comply to avoid losing their licenses and funding. That means lockstep compliance with horrible CDC requirements etc.
"Healthy" rentals is a clue - maybe next time they will make vaccinations/masks requirements to maintain licensing and without a license, you're out of business because your property is a health risk.

Not only is it a new tax, it's a grift for the inspectors. “Pay me a bribe or you'll never get you license approved.” And of course the unintended consequence will be that the poorest residents will be priced out of their apartments when the licensing fees, bribes to inspectors, and cost of repairs gets passed on to the tenants.
