EV runs out of juice, pushed by coal miners

DC tourist ran out of battery in the middle of a remote West Virginia road on Friday, near a coal mine on Mettiki Coal access road U.S. 48, a few miles outside of Davis, according to WTRF.

From FaceBook:

Randy Smith on Friday Some days are just better than others. Today at our mine off Corridor H an electric car from DC ran out of battery at the road entrance to the mine. Someone called one of our foreman and told him a car was broke down in the middle of our haul road. He went to investigate and found out they had indeed ran out of juice coming from DC to Davis for a get away weekend. He then went back to the mine and got guys to push the car to the guard shack so they could plug in to charge. ... See more

I don’t think Elen would do that.

Our regular mechanic will look at the van’s suspension, but he says he doesn’t have an employee who could fix the back door. I’ll call Sally, who is in the biz, and see what she suggests.

I suspect Elen has more common sense than the easily led FD. Someone tried to lead me when I was growing up I was like, “You’re tryna trick me, aren’t ya?”

FD is better but that’s probably because Rob’t has a stabilizing influence on her. For which I’m grateful!

Yes, Sally could probably fix it if given the right tools and half-day’s head start. She’ll do OK.

I’m glad the suspension is being looked at, though. I don’t like when the steering gets squirrely.

I don’t know if she could fix it, but at least she can probably figure out what business can fix it. When she was the parts delivery driver, she went to dozens of different repair shops.

She can probably find someone who could fix it for not a lot of money, so I say, ask her. You need to be able to use the door.

When is a door not a door?

I did parts delivery for a while. It’s a good retirement job.

*ahem* When its ajar.

I’d do that except I don’t have a delivery vehicle. Next time I move, I aim to correct that.

When it can’t be opened from the inside or the outside?

Sally had a couple of suggestions.

Toby: And I was washed up on this little atoll.

Zenas: Wait! What’s an atoll?

Toby: Well, you know, a little sand, a little gravel, and nothing else atoll.

I don’t know who stole from whom, but when my brudder was at MIT he used to sing, to the same tune:

We are, we are, we are, we are, we are the engineers.
We can, we can, we can, we can, demolish 40 beers.

I was walking up Third Avenue today when a pedestrian in front of me was creamed by a bicycle coming the opposite direction around the 55th Street area, right where the P.J. Clarkes is.

Bicyclists in Manhattan need to have the common sense to ride only in the same direction of traffic. Pedestrians in Manhattan have to look both ways before crossing, even if the walk signal is flashing and even if the street is a one way.

I wasn’t much of a pro sports fan until I moved to Houston and the Astros built Enron Field (now Minute Maid Park).

But when I was a kid the man who lived across the street had a daughter and son-in-law who came down every spring. I used to baby sit for their kid, then kids. The s-i-l was George Mitterwald, catcher for the Twins.

Had I been just a hair smarter, I’d have asked to be paid, at least once, with an autographed baseball.

Actually, the correct response is, “Boo! Boo! Bad! Bad!”

It was part of a skit full of such bad jokes that was in Grandpa’s vaudville show.

Zenas: Wait a minute! You married a pea hen?

Toby: Yes, and then ...

Zenas: (interrupting) Do you believe in mixed marriages?

Toby: Oh, no! Me and the pea hen’s both Baptist.

When I lived in Manhattan, a pedestrian was killed by a hit and run cyclist. I think that was late 2018 on the upper east side.

Yeah, like I said: addictive.

I only know because I keep track of how many I’ve played since I bombed out with an X/6. The website seems to have a thing for stats.

If I remember right, it coincides with my FR anniversary. I don’t know why I don’t recall that when the anniversary happens...it’s Pi day...

It’s a good reminder for pedestrians to always be alert in every direction!
