Man Learns He Needs New EV Battery, Hit with $30,000 Price Tag - More Than Car Itself

In a case of highly charged sticker shock, a Florida Chevrolet dealer admits that it offered to replace the battery in a hybrid car for more than the vehicle is worth.

As reported by the website AutoEvolution, the case of the almost-$30,000 battery was being bandied about on social media for days, with some folks believing the tale and other relegating it to the pile of urban myths.

The story was based on a copy of an estimate for the battery of a 2012 Chevrolet Volt that was making the rounds. The Volt was a hybrid that was produced as Chevy was dabbling in the electric vehicle market. Its place in Chevrolet’s lineup has now been taken by the Bolt.

The estimate said that getting the battery would set the car’s owner back $26,853.99. Other costs brought the total bill to $29,842.15 — essentially $30,000.

According to the automotive site Edmunds, a 2012 Volt is estimated to go for between $7,999 and $17,590 these days.

Chevrolet advertises that its new Bolt starts at $25,000.

In the end, the truth about a used car came from a car dealer – in this case Roger Dean Chevrolet in Cape Coral, which prepared the estimate.

“This is an estimate for a 12 year old vehicle out of warranty and for a battery that is extremely hard to get, due to the older technology of the 12 year old vehicle,” the dealership posted on Facebook in an attempt to set the record straight.

“So, the new way of shopping for an auto is to buy a battery with an auto built around it. when the battery dies you chuck the whole thing and buy a new battery with a new auto around it.”

You keep repeating this lie!

Maybe with the high cost of replacement batteries and

all the rolling brownout trouble in CA

some clever fellows will start doing youtubes of

electric to gasoline (hybrid?) conversions.

Might cost less than 30K

Lol. Winter is coming. My chick’s got 3 salvaged cells of a n old prieus battery I bought for 35 bucks off a bad 30k battery on craigs list. I charge it by an array of solar charged lawn light panels and a few spin wheels I stripped out of yard sale loot. If I get the stream making juice I can cut the electric. ;-)

In 2015 I was talked into buying a new Prius. I thought it would be my final car, a nice low budget car for a widow with a limited income. I put 30,000 miles on it in three years.
Then I started thinking about how much it was going to cost to replace the battery when it runs out of juice. At the time three years ago the cost was estimated to be around $6000. I thought my car won’t be worth $6000 when the battery quits so I will not be able to sell the car or buy a new battery.
So I traded it in for a Toyota RAV4. I have car payments but I can afford the car payment. And a new battery might be $200.
The friend (from CA) who talked me into buying the Prius doesn’t speak to me anymore because I traded that car in. Well maybe that was the final straw. There might’ve been other things that caused her not to want to talk to me anymore.

If you lived real close to work couldn’t you just get a long extension cord?

What happens to a Prius when the battery is weak? Can’t you just drive it on the gas engine? You still have 98 horsepower for a 3000 pound car which doesn’t sound unworkable.

I don’t know what happens. I’m just an old lady. But I got scared and I decided to go conventional and leave the Prius for someone else. It made me feel better

one of my friends has a prius, his battery is going bad.

he said that his mpg has gone down quite a bit.

He also said that there is a place near him that will replace it for $695 with a 6 month guarantee or $995 with 1 year.

I remember seeing leaf batteries for cheap at my local self pull junkyard.

If I ever do the off grid thing I will get some probably.
