Neurofeedback shows promise for addressing 'chemo brain' in pilot study
Medical Xpress / University of California, LA / Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine ^ | August 25, 2022 | Stephen Sideroff et al

Restoring normal functioning in the brains of cancer patients through neurofeedback could potentially alleviate the mental fogginess that many report after treatment, according to researchers.

The study is one of the first to indicate that neurofeedback, or electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback, could help address cognitive deficits of cancer patients experiencing "chemo brain," a myriad of symptoms that could include problems with memory, concentration and organization, as well as other symptoms like trouble sleeping and emotional difficulties. Previous research has found that neurofeedback, in which brain waves are trained to operate in optimal frequency patterns, has helped improve cognitive function in patients with cognitive impairments like attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, stroke and seizures, as well as helped regulate brain activity in patients with substance use and post-traumatic stress disorders.

The study participants received a series of 18 neurofeedback sessions, scheduled for 30 minutes each over a six-week period. During these sessions, sensors were placed on the scalp and earlobe to monitor brain wave frequencies. Patients were shown a monitor displaying these frequencies in bar graphs, and they were told their goal was to increase or decrease the amplitude of specific frequency ranges to turn each bar green. They received audio and visual feedback when they successfully shifted these amplitudes.

Quantitative EEGs taken after the 18 neurofeedback sessions were completed found that brain wave frequencies had significantly normalized in seven of the nine study participants, and they had significantly improved in the other two.

Neurocognitive testing conducted after the neurofeedback sessions showed substantial improvements in the study participants' information processing, executive set shifting and sustained visual attention. Each improved in everyday functioning and had overall psychological improvement.

Neurofeedback works with some other conditions, but to be able to control brain fouling from toxic chemicals is not something I would have expected.

It’s real. I recall driving months after treatment and would feel lost on roads I had driven on for decades. Completely confused. I’d forget important dates. Things you’d take for granted knowing. But, feeling lost while driving definitely left me worried. I probably should have done puzzles etc

I hope they can find recommendations/something to help.

Placebos do work.

Scientists should research how to make placebos work better rather than just testing drugs by comparing them to placebos.

The mind and consciousness is a very powerful tool.

When I was working on my psych degree, I was in the research lab hooked up to an EEG and decided to meditate while looking at the screen. Essentially this was creating a biofeedback loop.

Immediately the screen flatlined. To professors told me the machine malfunctioned, so I switched to another machine. Same thing.

This was back in 2002 and I didn’t understand the higher spectrum of consciousness frequencies and neither did the profs.

What the screen was showing was very high gamma frequencies with very low amplitude. The old analog EEG equipment didn’t even measure these high frequencies.

Keep in mind that the EEG was showing the action potential firing rate of the neurons in my brain.

The Dalai Lama sent ten of his monks to the University of Wisconsin for EEG studies and the results showed gamma frequencies with very high amplitude. With further study I realized that the amplitude reflected the voltage fluctuations necessary to spark the gap. This is why automobiles have coils to step up the voltage so the spark can jump the gap in the spark plug and ignite the gas.

So the question became, How did I close the neural gaps and reach the high frequencies without increasing the consciousness voltage. (Further examination showed that the screen was not flatlined, but very small amplitude fluctuations. It looked like a hacksaw blade.)

When I died in 1988, the Love I experienced in Heaven was so strong it essentially attached my masculine and feminine consciousness together, thus closing the neural gaps.

This resulted in a changed perception of reality to where I could perceive directly with my consciousness beyond my physical body. This is how the mystics of all religions attain their abilities.

With the increased consciousness frequency, consciousness itself became physical to me and allows me to read the stored memories of past experiences in the souls of people around me.

I know this sounds bizarre, but there are many levels of consciousness in the human soul and we can grow to experience the higher levels we call Heaven while still here in our physical bodies.

The abilities at these higher levels are how the mystics heal, and is how prayerful healing works. I often see and feel the prayers of others as brighter consciousness.

Not bizarre at all and you're not alone on that. It's just that most people have near-death experiences so profound they either can't communicate them well not being erudite or fear being ridiculed as a nut. I purposely took nearly every drug available in my youth trying to see if any led to a higher plane of enlightenment.

Of course none of that actually did but the experiences, especially the hideously bitter peyote you have to chew, forces you to see yourself through and through in a detached way - amongst a lot of other amusing stuff. Hallucinogens are for tough people so are rightfully warned about.

Warped me out so bad (not) I quit college and joined the Army, eventually becoming a hyper-conservative our modern government considers a domestic terrorist. You are too if you keep frequenting this site.

Why do they only study pilots?

I know exactly what chemo-brain is. Eventuallly it stops as time passes and the body heals from the treatments. But you can feel foggy headed for a time.

I never had an experience where I died and lived again to tell about it. But I do take Jesus word for it. So I have learned to pray in his name.

The flat out best sermons you’ll hear in the USA are preached at Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg VA. Its not just about the home pastor. He brings through a parade of the best preachers from around the country. A lot of the lawyers who worked on the supreme court case to overturn Roe V Wade —attend that church. You can google Cornerstone and pull up the sermons.

I just started attending that church in the last two years after my previous church went woke. Its a terrible thing to go to a church where you feel like a crazy guy. And a great relief to worship and pray among people who think like you do.

That is interesting. I became certified in EEG biofeedback back in the eighties when I worked at the forensics hospital.
Studied at Menninger when it was still in Kansas. The focus was PTSD, and other trauma.
I didn’t know it was still “a thing”.

I worked on puzzle books the whole time I was on treatment, even during the treatments. And still, not long after treatment ended, I would be driving a route I had taken for years, and suddenly I wouldn’t know where I was or where I was going. I could do puzzles just fine, though. lol

Oh boy - you went thru it too. Other than the driving, do you think the puzzles helped at all?

I’m not sure... IIRC, I did mostly crosswords and logic puzzles. I was in my mid-forties. To this day (a decade later), I do well if I’m writing something down or solving a problem on paper. OTOH, I have trouble thinking of the right word when I’m speaking. Even people who’ve never been sick have that problem, but I do worry all the surgeries and other medications (even after chemo) might’ve caused an issue.
