New study shows Rhodiola rosea root might be beneficial for managing type 2 diabetes
Medical Xpress / University of California, Irvine / Scientific Reports ^ | August 15, 2022 | Mahtab Jafari et al

A team of researchers has discovered that treatment with an extract from the roots of the Rhodiola rosea plant might be effective for helping manage type 2 diabetes, showing promise as a safe and effective non-pharmaceutical alternative.

The study found that in a mouse model of human type 2 diabetes, Rhodiola rosea lowered fasting blood sugar levels, improved response to insulin injections, modulated the composition of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract and decreased several biomarkers of inflammation.

"The prevalence of type 2 diabetes and the associated health costs have risen steadily in recent decades. Humans have used plants and natural products for thousands of years to treat diseases, and our study shows Rhodiola rosea is a good candidate for further investigation," said author Dr. Mahtab Jafari. "Current treatment recommendations include lifestyle changes as well as oral and intravenous medications. However, these drugs have significant limitations or side effects, increasing the need for new therapeutic interventions."

The team utilized a genetically engineered mouse model that develops obesity, insulin resistance and high blood sugar, similar to advanced human type 2 diabetes, to test whether Rhodiola rosea could improve glucose homeostasis.

"Our findings suggest that Rhodiola rosea might be beneficial for treating type 2 diabetes, acting through changes in the microbiome that result in increased gut barrier integrity and decreased translocation of inflammatory molecules into the blood circulation," Jafari said. "Gut barrier integrity influences body weight and insulin response, and this botanical product may improve the responses of liver and muscle tissues to insulin produced by the pancreas."

"Our research presents a solid case for the importance of conducting high-quality pre-clinical studies based on sound methodologies to evaluate the efficacy of standardized plant extracts. We have set the stage for human clinical studies," Jafari said.

My wife has used this (Solaray brand) for occasional blood pressure spikes, and it has been helpful.

This is a new use, to me.

Friggin’ love this stuff. I took it to help with my mood swings and itworked like a champ, but, unfortunately, it’ll make arthritis flare up like crazy. I had to stop taking it. Bummed about it.

Seems to have the opposite effect on me. I don’t know if it’s a cortisol boost or what, but it makes me jittery and shoots my blood pressure up like I drank ten cups of coffee.

I used to take a small amount pre-workout, since that was helpful for pushing through some hard sets, but I felt like I had to be really careful with it.

I’m seeing a lot of may and could in reviews of it. Healthline states in their presentation 7 science-based health benefits of Rhodiola rosea.

May help decrease stress
May help with fatigue
Could help reduce symptoms of depression
May improve brain function
May improve exercise performance
May help manage diabetes
May have anticancer properties

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/rhodiola-rosea#TOC_TITLE_HDR_8

Of the seven science based health benefits not one of them said will or does. They’ve got a long way to go.

You go ahead and wait 30 years until it says it will.

Each of those “mays” you listed had at least one study showing it helped.

No can even say a healthy diet “will” do anything except likely cause better things to happen and cause worse things to likely decrease.

“You go ahead and wait 30 years until it says it will.”

I hope to be around in 30 years. But I can promise you if people start to consume things from what some expert says, they won’t last anything close to 30 years.

There have been many drugs banned after they were introduced to the public because of the lack of quality time centered studies of them. Ever wonder why all the covid vaccines didn’t receive FDA clearance for other than emergency sanctioning. It’s because they weren’t sure what was going to happen and they didn’t want to take the hit.

Here are a few of the FDA banning of unsafe drugs used in parts of the world. Many were discovered years after they were put on the market:

DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane) was developed as the first of the modern synthetic insecticides in the 1940s. It was initially used with great effect to combat malaria, typhus, and the other insect-borne human diseases among both military and civilian populations. It was pulled off the market in 1972. EPA issued a cancellation order for DDT for its potential human health risks. Human health effects from DDT include vomiting, tremors or shakiness, and seizures.

Oxyphenbutazone is a drug that is a non-opioid painkiller. It is commonly used as a single drug in many underdeveloped countries like India and Pakistan; however, it is strictly banned in the USA due to its side effects – bone marrow depression and the reduction of blood cells.

Nimisulide is another non-opioid pain killer that was never introduced in the USA due to its certain side effect – liver failure. And it is a completely banned medicine in the USA list.

Propoxyphene is also banned in the USA due to its adverse effects to the heart rhythm and electrical activity of the heart. Nitrofurazone is also banned for the same reasons.

Valdecoxib was an NSAID pain medication that had been in the market from 2001-2005. But this was recalled by the FDA in 2005 because it was causing adverse heart effects including heart attack, and severe serious skin reactions like epidermal necrolysis and erythema multiforme.

Efalizumab was used to treat psoriasis but it caused progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in many patients who then had to face inflammation and damage to their central nervous system, so it was recalled in 2009.

Many of these drugs, and many more, were banned when it was determined through extended study they were dangerous and had been in use. Some people during the pandemic were told that maybe bleach could kill covid and they started consuming it.

And this is a short list. If they haven’t received extended study which can take possibly 10 years, it’s a toss up. And a much shorter life with a possible painful end. I’ll wait.

DDT was not toxic to people. There was a guy who went around ingesting teaspoons of it, without effect.

DDT was only banned because of unwarranted fears that it thinned the egg shells of eagles.

It’s unnecessary loss is responsible for tens of millions of deaths.

I think about the effects of DDT and what opinions mean to it and I’ll need more than an article from Junk science.com. Steve Milloy is the editor of this blog, and the writer of the article you displayed, and within their web page it states that the number one reason for the blog is:

“The media may use junk science to produce sensational headlines and programming, the purpose of which is to generate increased readership and viewership. More readers and viewers mean more revenues from advertisement. The media may also use junk science to advance personal or organizationsl social and political agendas.”

DDT has also been used in the past for the treatment of lice.
It was especially used to dust service people coming from overseas. My father was dusted in WWII when he returned from Germany and Italy. He died of complications of diabetes 2.

“People excessively exposed to DDT while working with the chemical or accidental exposure report a prickling sensation of the mouth, nausea, dizziness, confusion, headache, lethargy, incoordination, vomiting, fatigue, tremors in the extremities, anorexia, anemia, muscular weakness, hyperexcitability, anxiety, and nervous tension.
Mammals exposed to moderate doses (500 mg/kg) of DDT (technical) have an increased risk of liver tumors. DDT is highly fat soluble. When fat stores are used during periods of starvation, the breakdown products of DDT are released into the blood where they are toxic to the liver and the nervous system.

NPIC is the National Pesticide Information Center and is a cooperative agreement between Oregon State University and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Might be a little more reputable than junkmail.com.

The direct DDT exposure toxic effects in humans include developmental abnormalities, reproductive disease, neurological disease, and cancer. The exposure DDT metabolite DDE (dichlorodiphenyldichloroehtane) also promotes abnormal human health effects such as childhood diabetes and obesity.
