The auto industry gambles its finances on big electric vehicles for the rich, like Ford’s Mustang Mach-E and GM’s Hummer EV, and second-rate cars for everybody else.
OK. Buyers aren’t drawn to the electric Mustang or Ford’s new F-150 Lightning pickup to solve climate change. These are exciting, high-tech gadgets in their own right. And that’s fine. Even so, customers’ appetite might slacken if they were told the truth. Ford leaked this week for the benefit of the investment community plans to lay off thousands of workers to fatten the profits of its conventional vehicles.
As Ford CEO Jim Farley said in March, “we need them to be more profitable to fund” Ford’s $50 billion in spending on mostly high-end EVs, which have the least chance of being net reducers of CO2.
Their dreamland is Norway, where hybrid and electric-vehicle miles now exceed conventional-vehicle miles, thanks to generous subsidies to EV buyers. Paid for how? With 0.07% of the world’s people, Norway exports 2% of the world’s oil and gas, 30 times its share of global population.
According to the consultancy AlixPartners, some $526 billion is currently being invested to create dozens of mostly high-end electric vehicles aimed at the 17% of buyers who constitute the luxury market. The impact on climate of these cars will be zero.

i wanna play whack a troll some more... 😁
—”but that doesn’t look like a Mustang, it looks like a gelding.”
Rimshot!
And about one and a half slower to 60 than a Tesla Plaid.
IIRC every one of them has been recalled! for stopping in the middle of the road!!!
—”And the “miles driven” taxes that will be coming.”
And that is a fact, Jack!
—”Dealer: No we don’t do trade-ins.”
Yes, there will be dead branches on the EV family tree as underdeveloped technology moves into the market.
But there will also be winners.
YMMV.
“And that is a fact, Jack”!
Lol
I wonder how many EV owners realize that.
—” having EVs so everyone knows they care about the Earth on their way to Starbucks.”
Around here most only drive to the train station or a local job.
Free Republic members seem to be an exception driving coast to coast every few days? (Drug runs?)
In my suburban neighborhood, more than half have an EV or hybrid commuter car.
One even charges a Tesla with his undocumented solar panels!!!
Around here you are supposed to get a special permit and a note from the village chief to install solar panels.
He skipped that part of the process.
—”If they can produce powdered hydrogen for use in automobiles, it will wipe out the EV vehicles quickly.”
Hydrogen Power Isn’t as Green as It Looks
The gas can contribute to climate change. It’s prone to leak dangerously and often dirty to produce.
Hydrogen production today is dirty and energy-intensive. Methods exist that could virtually eliminate the greenhouse-gas emissions, but there’s a more fundamental challenge: Hydrogen itself contributes to climate change when it leaks into the atmosphere.
Scientists have long known that hydrogen triggers indirect warming effects in the atmosphere. As the smallest possible molecule, it is difficult to contain. More, the latest research reveals that—depending on time frame—hydrogen’s warming power is two to six times as great as previously recognized.
Most like yourself buy them to make yourself superior to us Les Misérables you have to avoid all day long.
Deplorables like myself cannot spend 60K for a car with a roundtrip range of 200 miles. Must be nice to drive while looking down your nose at all those sub-humans around you.
It is not upside-down logic. It is a total scam on the dumb masses that have no clue about energy generation, internal combustion engines and electricity production and storage.
I have been so thankful that the USAF sent me through a basic electronics course at Keesler AFB. Most Americans believe in the great god electron and all of the mumbo-jumbo that goes along with it. An added benefit of a forty year telecommunications career, is that I am not compelled to answer a ringing telephone or to check a text message ever.
—”I wonder how many EV owners realize that.”
I have had an eve on the EVs for some time until last week our son drove 100 miles each way to work all expressway and had a VW diesel.
A neighbor made a super offer on his house at just the right time...
Now he is 100 miles further south and I will need full self-driving even more! And the nuts have set EV/FSD back more than a few years.
Worse still, the nutters are after Musk to assist their UAW pals.
While they are busy trying to pull down Musk they should remember; You can never get up if you gotta hold the other S O B down.
Good post. thanks.
—”Deplorables like myself cannot spend 60K for a car with a roundtrip range of 200 miles. “
Not many 60K, more than a few Nissan Leaf and Prius.
They are used for commuter cars and kid cars. they replaced simple econoboxes.
Mostly just cheap S O Bs like me.
My wife’s Prius V cost way less than the Honda accord we gave the kids. Yes you might find a rock bottom Accord for about the same, but a stripo.
—” I am not compelled to answer a ringing telephone or to check a text message ever.”
About five years into my retirement before I could make that statement.
First month I used it, 800 miles in the volt .1 gal fuel used, so far 2nd month 600 miles 0 fuel used. I can dig it. In 2 months I put about 8 gallons in the Ram just hauling lumber and such. So has saved me about 60% I figure so far.
When the battery craps out, i'll re-appraise my decision lol.
Yep. They say this every year without fail. A week or two with hot temps and “oh it’s global warming” while ignoring the other 51 weeks it isn’t hot. Actually now that I remember, last year was pretty cool and people like AOC said nothing. But oh! Once it hits 90 or 100, CLIMATE CHANGE!!
They should check out record temperatures in the country, almost none of them are even near being recent..........

#46 I bet she supports electric cars.
And it's only a 10 gallon tank. I can get over 400 miles on one filling, and I don't drive that much anymore so I can go for over close to two months between refills.

Please read the article about powdered hydrogen and its capabilities and characteristics. Not the same a gaseous hydrogen. For now I’m keeping with my hydrocarbon powered vehicle.
Chinese cars are not sold in the U.S. as the do not meet stringent FMVSS / SAE Standards.
DOT also for glass and lighting and their lenses.
Some people take things way too seriously around here and think everything it to be taken literal. It was a joke on the author of the article complaining about big SUVs.
The pics I posted aren't what one would consider cars/trucks/SUVs. The youtube video I linked to is a guy in the US that bought one and had it shipped here for his dad to use around the property because it was cheaper than one of those UTVs that cost $20-40k. I doubt he'll be able to buy parts for it when it breaks but oh well.
