Critical elements of one of the most cited pieces of Alzheimer’s disease research in the last two decades may have been purposely manipulated, according to a report in Science.
**SNIP**
The highly influential paper, which was published in Nature in 2006, has helped guide billions of dollars in US federal government research into Alzheimer’s, according to Science.
The study, which looked at cognitive decline in mice, proposed that a specific amyloid protein may be responsible for cognitive decline. The hypothesis has since dominated the field, and researchers have worked for years to understand the mechanism by which such proteins may lead to decline.
But a neuroscientist in Tennessee, Vanderbilt University professor Matthew Schrag, said in a Science article that he and other reviewers have identified as many as 10 papers on the protein that deserve deeper scrutiny. The report also cited other prominent researchers who have had difficulty replicating results of the studies on the specific proteins.
“I focus on what we can see in the published images, and describe them as red flags, not final conclusions,” he told Science, when revealing his role as a whistleblower. “The data should speak for itself.”
The heart of the matter is whether images in multiple papers were manipulated to better support a hypothesis, with the work of researcher Sylvain Lesné under particular examination. Lesné, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota, is now under investigation by the university.
His co-author on several papers is Dr Karen Ashe, also a University of Minnesota researcher and one of the most prominent Alzheimer’s researchers in the country. She described the potential manipulation of images as “devastating,” to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, but criticized the idea that her research into amyloid proteins singularly guided federal and drug company spending.

Just eat more avocados and eggs yolks, and ignore Nature and your stupid doctor who learned nothing about nutrition in what passes for medical school these days.
Good summary. Thank you.
“Who checks the fact checkers they have chosen to publish? “
Color me shocked. /s
I’ve labeled Alzheimer’s research fraudulent for years, ESPECIALLY after they buried evidence that it’s caused principally by systemic inflammation.
And I have nothing kind to say about those running the fundraising ops for this research.
Dad was sinking into senile dementia at the same time Mom was about five years into her battle with Alzheimer’s. My sister and I were caring for both. We went to an “Elder Service” attny for ONE appointment only and that was just to mollify my sister. Proved to her in that one meeting that I, a retired Telco cable splicer, was better at that game than that POS lawyer firm. My first indication they were a rip-off was when they demanded CASH up front before first consult.
Getting assets out of the folks’ names was a bit involved. Long story short, a lady at my parents’ bank steered me in the right direction any time I started to get confused. She wouldn’t take a dime, so I treated her and her husbane to a couple of dinners.
This woman was a Godsend. She told us that our situation was not unusual. A great many of my parents’ generation, children of the Depression, NEVER discussed finances with their children....no matter how much we pressed. It was just not their way. Evidently those fine, exemplary practitioners of the law were aware of this fact and saw a tidal wave of greenbacks coming their way.
Taking care of your folks against the ravages of Alzheimer’s is tough enough, especially since you know what the outcome is, but having to deal with the scum of the earth that infest the legal profession as well as the crooked judges and “guardians” that were crawling all over the Queens Co. (NYC) courthouse in the 90s and early 00s was really tough.
I knew enough to pick a good lawyer based on some research .
The first thing he did was refer me to a woman who specializes in getting Alzheimers patient into a very good nursing home. Which she did, and at a low PPA (Patient Payment Allowance.) I was pleased.
Then the lawyer stepped in and redid my will, got me a power of attorney, and did several other things.
I was more than satisfied with his bill.
The laws are different in every state, and you need to pick a good elder services lawyer, or you will pay for it in time and money to the nursing home. - Tom
The lady from the bank set my sister and I up to get the power of attny. Also helpd in getting my folks signatures verified (certified?) It was 20+ yrs ago and I forget the right term. My sister was an RN out on disability and I had taken early retirement for just this reason. I cooked and cleaned and learned to give injections. My sister took care of dealing with the doctors and hospitals since she spoke the language. Aside from that early $500 theft by the lawyer, we didn’t lose a dime. Just time and the heartache watching them deteriorate. Still, Dad made it to 85 and three months later Mom, who really wasn’t there anymore, made it to 82.
Like their doctor told us after Mom had passed, they wouldn’t have gotten a fraction of that care in ANY home...a fact I’m rather proud of.
Forget what?.........................🤦♂️
Sounds to me that you and your sister did a good job with the hand you were dealt.
There are different groups of people who have to deal with Alzheimer's patients.
One group is parents getting Alzheimer's, then you have a wife or husband who gets Alzheimer's, then there are friends who become caretakers for a person who has no relatives to help them out, and probably another group that I am not familiar with.
To me you are going to need outside help that you will not get from the medical profession.
That is why I suggest getting a good elder services lawyer, who understands the laws in your state to help you out. - Tom
