Five-year-old boy shoots dead his eight-year-old brother in 'tragic accident' at US home

A five-year-old boy has shot dead his eight-year-old brother in a "tragic accident" at a US home.

After a 911 call on Thursday afternoon, sheriffs went to a house in Jefferson County, Arkansas, to find a child "unresponsive" inside.

The county coroner was called and the child was declared dead.

Four other siblings and the mother were thought to be inside the home when the fatal shot was fired.

Investigators believe it was an accident.

Sheriff Lafayette Woods said: "This is a tragic incident that could have been avoided.

"I can't emphasise strongly enough that guns need to be well secured and kept out of the hands and away from children at all times.

"Gun owners that do not properly secure their firearms are just one split second away from one of these tragedies happening in their home."

According to statistics from the Brady Campaign, a non profit group that advocates for gun control, every day, 321 people are shot in the United States, with 111 of those killed.

Among those, 22 children and teens are shot.

In May, 19 children and two staff were killed by high school dropout Salvador Ramos in a shooting at a primary school in Uvalde, Texas.

The Arkansas Department of Human Services was notified about the shooting, with caseworkers arriving to assess the welfare of the children living in the home, as well as other conditions.

Family members could be seen gathering outside the home as deputies continued their investigation at the scene.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out.

This is not an accident, this was negligence by an adult who left a weapon where children could find it.

That individual should be prosecuted.

Now do one where someone turns away an assailant with a legal firearm.

Perhaps they are a cop and can get a pass for such an incident.

Cops nearly always get off for negligent discharges. So much so that if they don’t they are the extreme rarity and probably have someone gunning to take them down career-wise.

Jefferson County = Pine Bluff, the armpit of Arkansas.

Here in Kalifornia Governor Nuisance is quite eager to insure that children are ignorant about firearms. Five years old is plenty old enough to understand that firearms are not toys and that they can do irreversible damage. That is what I taught both of my kids at that age.

When I was young, I and all of my siblings knew where my Dad's 12 gauge shotgun and .22 rifle were in his closet.   After I turned 10 years old that is where my and my brother's 20 gauge shotguns were too.   We all knew if we ever touched them without his knowledge and permission he would have whaled the tar out of us into next week.

No such thing as an accident; it’s all premeditated carelessness.

Agree that this is negligence on the part of the gun owner, but the gun grabbers want ALL guns locked up regardless of whether that are young kids around that can get to them.

Gun grabbers say they want to prevent tragedies like this but instead they thrive on them.

Same here. There was no gun safe but we knew the consequences of even thinking of touching them w/o permission.

Interesting. My dad kept his firearm collection in a gun case with a flimsy, glass-fronted, door with a lock on it.

The key was always kept in the drawer underneath it. We were never told to keep away, hands-off, etc. In fact, I remember a few times, when I got into the cabinet and took a rifle out to plink. Never got in trouble. Never hurt anyone. It was just something that was part of the household.
