When I was young, I and all of my siblings knew where my Dad's 12 gauge shotgun and .22 rifle were in his closet.   After I turned 10 years old that is where my and my brother's 20 gauge shotguns were too.   We all knew if we ever touched them without his knowledge and permission he would have whaled the tar out of us into next week.

Same here. There was no gun safe but we knew the consequences of even thinking of touching them w/o permission.

Interesting. My dad kept his firearm collection in a gun case with a flimsy, glass-fronted, door with a lock on it.

The key was always kept in the drawer underneath it. We were never told to keep away, hands-off, etc. In fact, I remember a few times, when I got into the cabinet and took a rifle out to plink. Never got in trouble. Never hurt anyone. It was just something that was part of the household.
