New NYC PSA on “What to Do in a Nuclear Attack” Instructs Citizens to “Get Inside, Stay Inside, and… Follow Media” For Updates – “Officials” Will Notify You “When it’s Safe”

On Monday, the city of New York launched a new public service announcement (PSA) that provides guidelines about what residents should do in the event of a nuclear attack.

Unfortunately, New Yorkers who watch the PSA will likely be severely ill-prepared should a nuclear weapon detonate in their vicinity, as the video provides little in the way of specifics or useful information. Instead, the short clip instructs citizens to follow a rudimentary 3 step plan that leaves them completely reliant on the powers that be to come to the rescue.

According to the PSA, New Yorkers should 1) “Get inside” 2) “Stay inside” and 3) “Stay tuned” – or, as the narrator clarifies, “follow media” – in the event of a nuclear attack. After walking through the steps, the narrator hammers home the last point by commanding that the audience “don’t go outside until officials say it’s safe” to do so.

The video does not address what to do if one requires medical attention or food.

Sounds awfully similar to another step-by-step process that has been pushed recently – wasn’t get inside, stay inside, and don’t come out until the experts deem you can the basis of Covid lockdowns?

Wash. Rinse. Repeat. However, this time we are talking about a nuclear attack – something much more deadly than the fear-porn peddling Covid cultists could ever hope for with the virus.

But, instead of preparing the public for the horrific scenario, the lack of relevant information in the NYC PSA aims to create dependent masses who are reliant on the experts. And, it’s at a time when we are knee-deep in a proxy war with a country that possesses over 4,000 nuclear warheads.

It’s no coincidence this type of PSA is being released with what’s going on in Europe and the Pacific – whether it be to stoke fears or because of a legitimate, burgeoning threat. Nevertheless, the likelihood of a nuclear attack hitting NYC is currently slim to none, even according to the NYC Emergency Management Department, which put the chances of a strike at “very low.”

But, according to NYC’s Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol, the threat of a nuclear strike is “imminent.”

When Duck and Cover first appeared it actually made sense. Delivery systems were very limited. The likelihood of more than one bomb on a city was limited. The bombs themselves were small by later standards, fission not fusion. A 50kt exploding 5K ft over Times Square would break windows in eastern Queens. The mocking of Duck and Cover is valid as delivery systems and explosive power grew exponentially, but when I was doing it in the early grades it may well have worked.

“They just want to keep the streets clear while they make a run for it.”

Yeah—probably true, but clear streets in Manhattan is totally impossible if we are talking a matter of the few minutes just before or after a nuclear blast.

Most people in the blast zone will never even know what happened—much less had time to consider what to do about it.

Good point—and of course in those days there were actual fallout shelters which would have probably saved a lot of lives in that time frame.

1951 Citywide air raid drill

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pFfp-GSbeDE

I remember this one and at least one more citywide drill (1959?)

Air raid sirens on schools went off at noon regularly and were often tested through full repertoire at 11:00AM

Let’s see...where I live:

Naval Station Everett- 60 miles away
Naval Station Puget Sound (Bremerton)- 35 miles away
Naval Station Kitsap- 45 miles away
Subase Bangor (West Coast home of Ohio-class boomers)- 50 miles away
Joint Base Lewis-McChord- 2 blocks away (literally)

Yep...I’m screwed.

And the notion that “officials” wouldn’t have thought of things like that (families) in their selection and enlistment of guards is questionable.

You first have to believe that those in power don’t give a crap about the masses, that they will keep very needed information from them to the very last second, and that they have already thought of all the “I’m out for number one (wrt guards)” scenarios. I believe that’s what they will do. They have plans for it..... continuity of government and all that.

It might be better to live near Ground Zero and get incinerated in a flash versus a slow painful death from radiation poisoning.

A Japanese fella survived 2 atomic bomb drops.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi has the dubious distinction of having been within two miles of both blasts.

Your can stand at ground zero for the Trinity test in New Mexico, which was a surface burst. You also can stand in Hiroshima or Nagasaki ground zeros. With the right approvals you can go to the Nevada test site home to over 800 detonations many of them surface bursts and walk around the craters. Radioactivity falls off fast from fission products most have half life’s in the hours to days range only a few have weeks , months or years. For a surface burst of a one megaton fission fusion fission three stage weapon the initial fallout plume area will be well over 5000 rem per hour a lethal dose in a few minutes. Three feet of wet dirt or several tens of feet of concrete will give protection factors in the 10000 range making it survivable in a properly built shelter underground even if in the direct fall out plume zone. Being in the bottom deck of a multistory concrete parking shelter or basement would also give similar protection factors. Remember the blast zone is not the fall out zone. The fall out zone starts 10 miles or so down wind and stretches for hundreds of miles building will be left standing in those down wind zones outside the blast radius which for a 1 mt is only 4 miles or so. NYC subways would be nearly useless as shelters they are cut and cover types effectively trenches under the streets with steel and asphalt over the trench not nearly thick enough to stop.gamma rays. The deeper parts of Penn station would be a good spot to hide you would have 30+ feet of concrete and steel and dirt over you. Some of the deeper cross station tunnels would offer shelter 38th st station goes under some buildings. Two weeks is the length of time for a 5000 rem per hour field to drop to 1 rem or less per hour at that level you can then walk out of the fallout area to safety. Even a full days walk is then 24 rem a survivable dose 500 rem is the lethal dose and people have lived with 250.

Except for the approximately 30 minutes of abject terror from the time of warning until detonation.

When I was ducking and covering as a grade schooler in a school on MCAS Beaufort it likely would not have worked.

Although the Cuban missile crisis did add a sense of urgency...

...as did not knowing where dad was until we saw his squadron's aircraft in the Sunday funnies!

“Civil Defense” was largely abandoned during the late ‘60s.

Evacuating cities was seen to be impractical and counterproductive, as was sheltering in place in urban areas.

Both simply result in large numbers of refugees and wounded who cannot practically be cared for.

Better to die immediately or in the first day or two than much later and more agonizingly.

The Russians take a different approach. They have shelter space in Moscow and St. Petersburg for every citizen of those cities in deep subway tunnels with blast doors and propositioned supplies. This says something about which country values it’s citizens now doesn’t it.

Check out the size of this door that’s at least a 500psi door which means effectively a direct hit wouldn’t bust it open .
