The protection against severe illness from so-called natural immunity remains superior to the protection bestowed by COVID-19 vaccines, according to a new study.
People who survived COVID-19 infection and were not vaccinated had sky-high protection against severe or fatal COVID-19, researchers in Qatar found.
“Effectiveness of primary infection against severe, critical, or fatal COVID-19 reinfection was 97.3 percent … irrespective of the variant of primary infection or reinfection, and with no evidence for waning. Similar results were found in sub-group analyses for those ≥50 years of age,” Dr. Laith Abu-Raddad, with Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, and colleagues said after studying long-term natural immunity in unvaccinated people.
That percentage is higher than the protection from COVID-19 vaccines, according to other studies and real-world data.
Swedish researchers, for instance, found in May that two doses of a vaccine were just 54 percent effective against the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
South African scientists, meanwhile, found the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines peaked at 88 percent, and quickly dropped to 70 percent or lower.
The Qatar group found natural immunity for over 14 months after a person’s first infection “remains very strong, with no evidence for waning, irrespective of variant.”
The study was published ahead of peer review on the website medRxiv.
Few researchers have studied natural immunity long-term among unvaccinated persons, in part because many of the people have eventually received a COVID-19 vaccine.
The vaccines, meanwhile, have waned against both infection and severe illness over time, triggering recommendations for booster doses, with some Americans even getting five doses within 10 months.
The vaccines were once said to provide close to 100 percent protection against symptomatic infection. They now provide under 50 percent protection against infection after a short period of time, even after booster doses, following the emergence of Omicron.
That strain and its subvariants are dominant in countries around the world, including the United States and Qatar.
Natural immunity was thought to provide strong protection against reinfection. But the Qatari researchers found it provides poor protection against reinfection from Omicron.
Pre-Omicron primary infection against pre-Omicron reinfection was as high as 90.5 percent, and remained around 70 percent by the 16th month, according to the study. But pre-Omicron primary infection against Omicron reinfection was just 38 percent effective, although it was higher among people infected with the original Wuhan strain or with the Delta variant, and lower among those who got sick from the Alpha or Beta strains.
Modeling signaled a drop to zero percent protection by 18 months, but the shielding still appears to last longer than that of vaccines, researchers said.
“Vaccine immunity against Omicron subvariants lasts for <6 months, but pre-Omicron natural immunity, … may last for just over a year,” they wrote.
Limitations of the study included differences in testing frequency among the cohorts studied, and depletion of the groups who had a COVID-19 infection, due to their deaths.
Just as we always suspected.
If we had protected the vulnerable, and let healthy adults and children catch it, the whole thing would have came and worn itself out through herd immunity in 2020
Just a nitpik
There is no such thing as “herd immunity” as there is no immunity provided. The concept should be called “lower exposure” or some other term. All it takes is a person, outside of the community who is a carrier, to enter the community and the “herd immunity” goes out the window. The first medical journal use of the term was back in 1923 when there was little contact between communities. This is no longer the case.
Our borders are open and people can easily move between countries, states, counties and cities.
Continuing proof, as if it were needed, that CoupFlu policy has NEVER been about protecting public health.
I seemed to have missed the part where the natural immunity protection rates were compared to the vaccinated protection rates.
I am unvaccinated due to heart issues. Got Covid once, no systematic reinfection (yet). Wife was vaccinated with the Johnson and Johnson jab, and has had Covid twice since then.
just wondering.
Between 97.3% and 99.998% — no exaggeration.
DugwayDuke and the rest of the Branch Covidians are going to be upset with you for pointing out the truth.
This study is suspect.
This is the Nov 2021 study that has been the gold standard for comparing recovered immunity to vax.

That is not lacking in peer review, in fact it looks like most of the peers are co-authors.
Note that the study in question is outdated now and it is known that NO immunity from any source is very protective after a few months pass. So the urging of vax is outdated.
As for this Qatar study, the only age relevant comment is for >50 yrs old. Their life expectancy at birth is about 76, which is not a horrible skew.
The primary problem is finding such poor protection against infection or re-infection and then declaring the reverse for death. I will spend some time with the total study, but at first glance the primary problem is splashing the initial text with data for the young, who were not at death risk regardless.
Instead of thinking about a virus, think of the virus as representative of all the men you’ve ever known. Some were fat/thin, tall/short, blond/black hair, white/Asian/black, etc. If you were to develop natural immunity to all the men on that list, you’d be immune to almost any other population of men you came into contact with.
Now here’s immunity by injection. The science lab looks at the population and decides that most men are white, modest build, black hair, etc. They create a potion that makes you immune to just that one genotype.
Now, you get sick with “men.” Your immune system wipes out all of the white, modest build, black hair men and only the rest get to reproduce. The rest are unmolested and take over your body. You have just created the next plague of “men.”
Rince and repeat. The drug companies get rich.
Also, your immune system has been supercharged in such a way that it continues to produce an immune response to something that isn’t there, thus using up its reserves. If your immune reserves were already at a low ebb, you die from something that should have been easy to shrug off.
Just to nitpick your interpretation of Herd Immunity being applied uniformly to We the Useless Eater Humans. Immunity is 100% individual and determined by a variety of factors including heredity/genetics, lifestyle choices, environment, along with invasive medical therapeutics that break the protective blood barrier such as vaccines and other toxic drugs over a lifetime starting at birth. Humanity would have been long gone if we were as fragile as Liar Fauci declared in 2020.
The so-called severe SARS/COVID19 is Pneumonia, which has multiple causes including toxic pollution exposure. People can and do die from pneumonia. Could those who died from “SARS/COVID19” Pneumonia been treated more successfully if the approved treatment protocol allowed more than Ventilators and Remsdevir? Undoubtedly according to many doctors who didn’t sell their souls. Now the Unapproved Covid Jabs are finishing off the ones with the weakened immmune systems. Deaf ears for Fauci and his BigPharma/Media partners in crime. This whole Fearmongering ploy is about to kick in again with another Magic Killer Cootie to push the remaining Jab Hesitants off the Cliff one way or the other
A look at the entire study exposes the biggest problem. Their population is skewed profoundly young because 90% of the population are foreign workers. Their life expectancy from birth cannot be measured. Because they are 90% working age, they ae profoundly young.
The severity results become nearly useless. The outright re-infection results are similar to the study I posted above and indicates both vax and previous infection are not very protective soon after vax or infection.

the full text, dig down for the critical parameter — 90% of the population are foreign workers, and thus of working age. Young, statistically. Of course they find fewer deaths. They were safe infected or not.
100% agree that immunity is based on the individual’s medical posture.
Also agree that Pneumonia seems to be the actual killer in the Covid chain of events. I fought pneumonia 9 times in my life before I found out that there is a vaccine for it. Once I got the vaccine, I have not had further episodes. I think it would be an interesting study to see how those who already had pneumonia vaccine did ref Covid.
the problem is that covid mutates. the mutations get around both shots and previous infections. it looks more and more like the problem is in the innate immune system and not the adaptive immune system which the previous infections and the shots address.
The majority who get covid rarely get severe covid. So not sure what this really shows.
I was just looking at the Worldometer Covid stats for some of the countries that report 80%+ of the people to be fully vaccinated. There are currently 30 countries worldwide in that group. I didn’t check every single one, but the following countries had HUGE spikes in Covid cases months AFTER the vaccine rollout: Japan, Australia, South Korea, Vietnam, Brunei, Malta, Singapore, New Zealand, Spain, and Portugal. With the exception of Spain and Portugal, these countries went from just a few hundred (or fewer) cases per day to many thousands a day, sometimes 70,000 or more.
There can be no “herd immunity” until the majority of those who’ve had the Clot Shot are dead.
I had it in Oct. 20 and still had antibodies in Dec. 21. This week however I did catch the rona again, its not near as bad as the original time. Both felt like a sinus infection. I mainly have a headache and a cough that’s faded already. My wife finally caught it this week and essentially has ran a fever with a runny nose. We are regulated to working at home this week. And no jab for me or her.
But pre-Omicron primary infection against Omicron reinfection was just 38 percent effective, although it was higher among people infected with the original Wuhan strain or with the Delta variant, and lower among those who got sick from the Alpha or Beta strains.
I think I would have changed the title of the article.
Good to hear you’re both doing well.
It traveled through our home on more than one occasion. Symptoms similar to what you described.
