A Fresno woman is seeking monetary damages after a doctor removed her spleen instead of a diseased kidney, a mistake that left a pathologist “astonished,” according to a lawsuit.
The woman, Sarajane Parfitt, must undergo another operation to take out the kidney, and the removal of the spleen leaves her vulnerable to serious infections, according to medical experts. The lawsuit, filed in Fresno County Superior Court in June, contends the mistake has caused Parfitt “severe emotional distress.”
Paul Pimentel, Parfitt’s attorney, called the surgical error “insane...I’ve never heard of this in this community.”
Named in the lawsuit are Dr. Narayana Ambati, Community Regional Medical Center and Urology Associates of Central California. Also mentioned is another doctor identified as Shahin Chandrasoma of Pasadena.
Efforts to reach Ambati were unsuccessful. Mike Ball, a partner in Fresno law firm McCormick, Barstow, responded to an inquiry by saying:
“The incident involving patient Parfitt was subject of a full (California Department of Public Health) investigation last summer. Dr Ambati was NOT involved in the nephrectomy. The surgeon actually was a locum tenens, Dr. Chandrasoma. He is not affiliated with UACC. Curiously, he is not named in the recent lawsuit, but he is mentioned in paragraphs 10 and 12. I do not know who represents Dr. Chandrasoma.”

Not the first time this guy has been in trouble.
If my surgeon looked like the kid on the left I'd be running screaming for the door.
Would the name “ambati” be a clue ?
Mistakes happen and I did not need to have BOTH of my arms out of commission.
No matter how much money you may get in the lawsuit it is not worth it.
Locum Tenens is a temporary doc filling in for vacationing docs, and they are usually hired from afar. They arrive, present board certification / licensure and proceed.
The hospital has to check the qualifications and they likely did so. But in general that lawyer is right. The doc sued was not involved.
I had to look it up, too. It means to be a stand-in for someone who normally performs a particular task or duty.
Wonder if the latin ‘locum tenens’ evolved over time to become the word ‘lieutenant’?
Good think it wasn’t the wrong (healthy) kidney.
asked the candidates to list the features of a palpable left upper quadrant mass which might help you decide whether it is a kidney or a spleen. It is almost a shame to dedicate an entire chapter to the kidney-spleen controversy.
“Well, excuuuuuuuuse me!”
fill in temporary doctor

this is the problem.
Best bet still is a good Jewish doctor who studied hard.
Nowadays the staff help the patient(if possible) actually write the right or left on their skin. Then before they start cutting..there is a brief timeout for the staff to recite what and where the procedure is. Now done because many professionals can get very distracted.
I would cancel a surgery if the doctor I knew is not doing it.
She should have waited to sue until after the 2nd surgery
Could have been worse.
He might have cut her heart out instead.
They also make more money from Medicare and Medicaid then they can in india
I hate when that happens. :(
