The detained American basketball star Brittney Griner pleaded guilty to drug charges in a court near Moscow on Thursday, her lawyer said.

“I’d like to plead guilty, your honor. But there was no intent. I didn’t want to break the law,” Ms. Griner said in English, which was then translated into Russian, Reuters reported.

Ms. Griner has been detained in Russia since Feb. 17, accused by the Russian authorities of having a vape cartridge with hashish oil in her luggage at an airport near Moscow.

Aleksandr Boikov, her lawyer, said cartridges appeared in Ms. Griner’s luggage “because of carelessness.”

While I have no use for her and the wnba I think Russia should fine her about $5 Million and release her at a China border crossing. IMHO it isn't worth it for Russia to pay to incarcerate her.

“She pleaded guilty, stressing that she was carrying substances prohibited in Russia unintentionally, because she was packing in a hurry,” ..her Attorney stated.

Smart decision on her part. She’ll probably be home in a matter of weeks.

Time served and Deportation would be an adequate sentence.

She’s not a citizen...

I could go either way on this.

"I'm pleading guilty, but I didn't do anything wrong 'cause I didn't intend to do anything wrong."

Still flouting that black privilege that works so well in US courts, I see.

Russia would probably love to have her back in the USA bad-mouthing us and praising how lenient Russia was to her.

I don’t care if she gets life. I am no fan of basketball and damn sure no fan of overpaid, spoiled athletes.

Looks like a prisner swap is in the works ...which might be why she’s pleading guilty.

I wonder if they’ll convict her of the crime but dangle early release contingent on training Russian coaching staff to a gold-medal Olympic win in women’s basketball.

The Russians will put her to work digging ditches in Siberia.

She will pay for her food and lodging in hard labor.

She’ll be sentenced to 10 years prison, no parole.

Then maybe the Russians will trade her for someone they want back.

Smart decision on her part. She’ll probably be home in a matter of weeks.

They'll probably also ask her to sign and/or read a statement denouncing the USA, which would be no problem for her.
