I downloaded the video and watched it in slow motion and close-up. Whatever they set off is invisible.

This could have been avoided if they’d had a garden hose ready.

Where does the retailers store the unsold fireworks? I guess
they need to be secured like ammunition, gallons of gasoline,
etc.

I was a graduate student in Madison, WI in the mid-80’s and we used to go to Blackhawk Country Club to watch 4th of July fireworks. You would go to the course, take a blanket or beach towel and lie down on a green and look straight up and the display would fill your field of vision. One year we were there, and were particularly proximate to the launching site. As the show started, we realized we were a bit too close as the cardboard packaging of the fireworks were falling on us, to the point that safety goggles would have been smart. All of a sudden, the fireworks stop and fire department and EMT sirens are heard approaching. The program never resumed and everyone packed up and headed home.

In the paper the next day it was revealed that a fireworks exhibitionist (?) had been killed when he looked into the mortar tube of a launcher that did not work. Or so he thought. The mortar launched, hit him in the chin as he started to recoil. It then blew up and obliterated the poor fellow.

We drove by a place called “Nine Fingers Fireworks.”

“DO NOT FIND A FIELD! Do NOT launch fireworks in grasslands!”

Thanks! I always cringe when the townies come out to the “country” to shoot their fireworks that they can’t shoot in town and just pull over at some random spot and start shooting them into my property.

Yikes! Some training is required....

I was at Fiddler's Green, near Denver, in the late 80's at a concert featuring the band America. After which they had a 4th of July fireworks show.

It is indeed great to be nearly directly underneath the fireworks.

Today, our place has a great view of dozens of fireworks shows across the metro area.

“200 feet is excessive. You can barely see them from that far away!’

200 feet is about the closest I want to be to the mortar type fireworks shot off in my neighborhood, thanks. 200 feet is about the altitude attained. P.S. No problem viewing from that distance!

Yes, it is. I have to stay up just in case they set my house or lawn on fire. When I used to do it, I had more than 10 times the acreage or at my BILs with 50 times more.....

The more families and onlookers they invite to their yard size party each year will be just that more danger to the little children they bring.

Just last February, I sold a fix n flip on a hill in Scenic Heights Arvada for $1.4 mil. I pressed the hell outta the amazing view south to Denver, Pikes Peak, to Golden per what they would see on July 4th! Wish I could have been invited back. You must have one of those rare views, too. So cool!

Best practice is to set everything up in advance and spaced out.

"Spaced out" has another meaning which might have applied here.

Years ago my employer handed out brochures with advice for winter driving. They advised people to "stay spaced out in traffic". Several people in the office found that very amusing!

Those folks cleared out nicely. Woman’s instinct caused her to grab baby and quickly evacuate. Survival instinct at work.

OK, sure. If it’s a “mortar-type firework” that attains 200 feet, yes, stay 200 feet away. You’ll see my “formula” suggests staying further than that! But the fireworks shown are more like 20-foot fireworks. Heck the PROFESSIONALS barely even use 200-foot fireworks anymore; they aim for “under the weather” to increase visibility and minimize pollution. But I’m not contradicting you: there’s lots of people who love to “go big.”

The other night I was trying to estimate the vertical speed of the bigger shells. It seemed in the neighborhood of 200 mph (300 feet/sec) or a little less. I haven’t yet looked up actual figures but that seems in the ballpark.

*I did look it up — given as 333 feet/sec
