Where to move in retirement?

Posted on 07/02/2022 7:41:27 AM PDT by LouAvul

I'm in Oklahoma and appreciate the politics (Constitutional Carry; outlawed abortion) but don't like the weather.

I've lived in Florida, Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky and California. I like the weather in Michigan and California but don't like the politics.

I'd like milder summers and can handle cold winters. Long spring and fall weather is good.

Retirement age and all, so good medicine is important.

By the time we make the move (~2 to 3 years, likely) whatever adjustment the housing market will make will be done. Don't anticipate having to finance anything, etc.

Also, I'm a firearms "accumulator." Carry concealed 90% of the time and that's important. Constitutional firearms laws are always important.

What says the FR braintrust?

Conservative Illini flee the outstretched arms of Chicago. I’m guessing they will be bringing their conservative values with them. They are tired of their overlords.

You missed the super-sized African snails as big as your hand that bear nasty parasites. Try to keep up!

There might be a couple of other nasty critters now found in FL in the comments.

“There are all kinds of nasty snakes and spiders in AZ.”

I thought that was what you were saying. Guess not.

Born and raised in California. Left in 98. If I was retiring I would move back but only to certain parts. It is a beautiful state. It really is a shame. It beckons one like a pretty whore with the clap. I want to, but know I shouldn’t. Are the guns and politics that important? One crazy idea is Southern or Eastern Oregon. It is crazy only in the cities and the rest is pretty normal. Mild summers, mild winters. Shall issue ccw but just open carry to annoy the liberals. I lived right across from the Red River. I am with you on the weather. Too hot in the summer and that non stop wind in the winter got old fast.

If things go bad in a country, I don’t want to be the “rich” foreigner.

"For the record, anybody intending to move in the next few years, I recommend selling your house to prepare for the possible economic crash."

Why? With inflation coming on, why would you sell a hard asset only to buy the same thing later with inflated dollars?

Not to mention the advantages of having a fixed rate mortgage during inflation, and the tax advantages.

Do you think housing prices will drop faster than inflation grows? There's still pent up demand for housing.

Genuinely curious...

I don’t think resentment is much of a problem there. Rather, you are considered to have money and are therefore a potential target for scams especially real estate. On the whole, gringos have an advantage if you are fluent in Spanish.

So far as stability, that is a concern. I will have solar power and gravity fed purified water. And hopefully fresh fruit and vegetables and eggs. So I’ll insulate myself as much as I can. The worst case is the government appropriates all foreign owned land. That would be devestating to me, but also to the country. The really need foreign money more than the land. So I do not think it likely. Just possible
But the sad truth of the matter is that if present trends continue I see extreme instability coming to the US. And unlike Guatemala the US government does have the ability to surveil, seize, imprison etc on a mass scale. I’ll take my chances elsewhere

West of Tucson, south of Marana. Winters are fine, and I’m not moving again if I can help it.

Ground floor of your house.

I was gonna say, "out of your parents basement"

nothing says "look at me " as much as asking strangers for personal life advice..

That sounds roughly like the Chattanooga area. We’ve been exploring Benton, TN. We just returned from a week on the lower Hiwassee. So quiet and peaceful. Right now, it’s near the top of our list for moving to. We have ruled out the Knoxville area because of the home prices and it’s too close to Gatlinburg. Way too much traffic for our liking.

Our time frame is also 2-3 years. If you have some knowledge of the area you’re describing, I’d love to know more. My Spring planting season doesn’t get here until Mother’s Day. I need it to come a month or so before that. I can handle the heat, but am very tired of snow and freezing temps in April and sometimes May.

“Nearing retirement myself and after more than 40 years on the treadmill working in the big cities (Boston, NYC), living out in the middle of nowhere appeals to me.
Many say I will get bored but I don’t think so. I have stacks and stacks of books to read, plenty of music to listen to and a healthy body for taking long hikes in the woods. Fresh air, farm fresh eggs for breakfast, listening to the crickets at night. Watching the seasons change. All very appealing.

It will likely end up being rural New Hampshire for me.

Yeah, we are in our mid 60s and where to retire and when seems to be on my mind quite a bit these days. I grew up and lived many years on the Jersey Shore, not NYC by any means but still a grind. My spouse and I work in western NJ still, but in 2004 we moved to PA.

We are in a fairly low cost area of NE PA we have 4 acres and our street is very quiet. It is hard to believe we are 100 miles straight line west from NYC.

I have friends that are metro area transplants, one is retired NYPD. He and his wife are content here. This area is really “semi-rural” but is really nice but it might take some time to get used to once you make a move, you will come to hate the big cities.

We have as I see it 3 choices. First is to stay here and start using some of our yard for a garden. We have chickens but really basically they are pets at this point. Another option is a bigger place, looking at 10-20 acres in Bradford/Tioga County PA right on the PA/NY border. The third option is 20-50 acres in West Virginia. I went to school in WV, love the place and property is low cost but the state has it’s share of problems.

I can see where Vermont or New Hampshire would have it’s appeal but for me I don’t like the winters. But in the meantime I’m planning on working for another 5 years and putting as much money away as possible. We are debt free with a paid off mortgage so focused like a laser beam on that.

Got a little secrete for you or anyone that might be interested.

In Parks Az there will most likely be a nice little corner store coming up for sale sometime soon. A real nice tiny place. Just a little small corner store with a kitchen in the back and staffed. It is also the post office for the little community. I would say about a 100 or so houses around there.

The owners are about to go through divorce soon and I cant see that store surviving the whole thing.

All the locals stop for burgers and pizzas and drinks etc. The cops stop for coffee and whatever and do all the county workers.

And the people around are AWESOME!

Be a great place for a retired couple who wanna run a tiny little store-let the staff run it.

Wood Pellet heat..great food, small coolers for drinks..etc.

Just keep the food quality up..

I was waiting to make sure that wasn’t just another lib media fear mongering story.....as far as I’m concerned the jury is still out on that one. 😏

When I lived in Yavapai County, Prescott was the city. Good for a Walmart run every month or so. Tucson once a year for the gem show.
