Where to move in retirement?

Posted on 07/02/2022 7:41:27 AM PDT by LouAvul

I'm in Oklahoma and appreciate the politics (Constitutional Carry; outlawed abortion) but don't like the weather.

I've lived in Florida, Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky and California. I like the weather in Michigan and California but don't like the politics.

I'd like milder summers and can handle cold winters. Long spring and fall weather is good.

Retirement age and all, so good medicine is important.

By the time we make the move (~2 to 3 years, likely) whatever adjustment the housing market will make will be done. Don't anticipate having to finance anything, etc.

Also, I'm a firearms "accumulator." Carry concealed 90% of the time and that's important. Constitutional firearms laws are always important.

What says the FR braintrust?

For the record, anybody intending to move in the next few years, I recommend selling your house to prepare for the possible economic crash.

Your welcome back in Indiana.
We moved here from Nova, and have never regretted it. Slower pace, lower cost, everyone speaks English, good 2nd ammendment laws, liberal policy on homesite builds etc.

Sounds like you’re into the nice weather. The coast of northern calif has the nicest summers but the winters are dreary and depressing. It might mean owning 2 homes. They’re available. You just have to move twice a year.

The east coast is...from Palm Beach to Miami is like Westchester County (NY) with palm trees. Sarasota and points south are really nice.

Decisions such as moving in retirement involve a lot of considerations.

Only you and spouse or family can deal with some you didn’t mention, such as if any retirement destinations will enable you to visit family and friends, and visit favorite recreational vacation sites.

You will find your housing dollars go a lot further in some places than others. If your money situation is such that you could do the “snowbird” retirement pattern, and spend winter in warmer places, then you would have the best of both worlds as far as weather is concerned.

Have fun hashing all this out, and enjoy retirement. You’ve earned it.

Nearing retirement myself and after more than 40 years on the treadmill working in the big cities (Boston, NYC), living out in the middle of nowhere appeals to me.

Many say I will get bored but I don't think so. I have stacks and stacks of books to read, plenty of music to listen to and a healthy body for taking long hikes in the woods. Fresh air, farm fresh eggs for breakfast, listening to the crickets at night. Watching the seasons change. All very appealing.

It will likely end up being rural New Hampshire for me.

“Carry concealed 90% of the time and that’s important.”

Sorry, but you can’t move to PA. We CCWers carry 100% of the time. Just kidding; we’d make an exception for you, and get you up to 100%, in no time.

A bunker in the Wyoming mountains. Clear the vegetation for a clear field of fire and lay a defensive belt of mines. Have a cabin with wood heating and then write manifesto.

Or a condo on the beach in the Florida panhandle.

Eastern Oklahoma has some nice places, southern Missouri or NW Arkansas. No place is perfect and Heaven is looking better all the time.

Since retirement is in 2-3 years, keep an open mind to all alternatives and visit several locations during different seasons.
It also depends on what your leisure time activities are, and how physically fit you are; I enjoy gardening and farming but I am too old to start out all over again.
That said, I would consider New Hampshire or Maine, fairly close to the ocean for temperate climate, taxation, and economy.

I’m a Texan, but we have a wheat farm in NW OK. We go back and forth on occasion. I prefer Texas. My wife is from OK, but she prefers Texas. But, stay away from the big cities unless you like that sort of thing. The libs tend to gravitate there. The UT health system out here in rural east Texas is great! I like states like Wyoming, etc. But, not “redneck” enough for me LOL! And, the Texas politics are better. The only thing about Texas is the heat. But, in OK, you have a fair share of heat also. You should be used to it.

I live in West Tennessee.

We have 3 weeks of Fall and 3 weeks of Spring, then it's onto stinking hot summers and wet, freezing (but little snow) winters. The landscape is flat, but the TN river is near and beautiful.

East Tennessee has four proper seasons and is picturesque with mountains. Ditto for Middle TN in the Fall Creek Falls state park area. Not nearly as populated as Gatlinburg. We go to Fall Creek Falls on vacation. There's never any traffic.

“I thought Florida was full”

IT IS

Not to mention
the man eating sharks and alligators there are water moccasins, rattle snakes, coral snakes, mosquitoes, roaches that are commonly referred to as “palmetto bugs” that can get as big as at least the size of your thumb, black bears, coyotes, wild hogs, 20 foot boa constrictors, pythons, fire ants, sinkholes that can open under your bedroom and swallow your house whole. Then there’s professional termite tratments for homeowners, 90+ degree heat with 90% humidity much of the year, hurricanes, and the tornadoes that the hurricanes spawn, tropical storms and tropical depressions which can also spawn tornadoes

Hill Country, Texas.
Temp does vary and views spectacular.
Lots of room for your home, you can choose if you want to hear the neighbors or even if you want to hear road noise, or not. Your choice.
