I'm in Oklahoma and appreciate the politics (Constitutional Carry; outlawed abortion) but don't like the weather.
I've lived in Florida, Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky and California. I like the weather in Michigan and California but don't like the politics.
I'd like milder summers and can handle cold winters. Long spring and fall weather is good.
Retirement age and all, so good medicine is important.
By the time we make the move (~2 to 3 years, likely) whatever adjustment the housing market will make will be done. Don't anticipate having to finance anything, etc.
Also, I'm a firearms "accumulator." Carry concealed 90% of the time and that's important. Constitutional firearms laws are always important.
What says the FR braintrust?
Antigua, Guatemala. Beautiful city, lots of ruins, cobblestone streets, art everywhere, fantastic restaurants. Perfect climate year round — 70’s every day, 50’s every night. Views of two volcanos. Cheap. A couple can live very well for$2000 a month including a maid or gardener. Because the country is so undeveloped, almost all veggies, fruit and meats come from less than 100 miles away. Mangos and a Avacados growing in your backyard. And best of all a government so poor and corrupt it can’t oppress the people like it wants to. It’s feeedom by default.
Went through two hurricanes during my last Florida residency - enough was enough! Flatness, traffic, obnoxious transplants from all over who screwed up wherever they were from and come south, etc. No thanks for a retirement destination.
Have you looked at the influx of blue-staters to Tennessee?
It's one of the top 3 destinations for Illinoisan's.
I moved to Palm Beach County (Boca Raton) in 1990 as I started high school - I knew nobody who was actually born there - it was already Scarsdale south even back then.
We just got back from a road trip in the south and spent time in Natchez, MS. It’s a beautiful snall town with very low real estate prices and right on the river. The town has also authorized $6,000 for each person who moves there. Empty nesters are beginning to move in, setting up new small businesses like theatres and cafes. The town has a rich history and is still small, but with every amenity you might need. Plus, the bridge to LA is right there, so you have access to that town, too. Quick road trips down to the gulf on weekends.
Map of the New Confederacy?
That's almost one state per gender!
Stay away from Florida! Hot, mosquitos, alligators, rain, hurricanes, tornadoes, Disney, (Orlando in general). We may be free, but it sucks to be here.
Do have to include the /S ?
Stay put. Vacation during extreme weather.
Be careful of Amarillo, significant water issues are on the horizon for the Amarillo/Canyon area.
The tri-state area where Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia come together. Great fishing, hunting and can always find a place near a city or a cabin in the foothills of the smokey mountains. 4 hours from the ocean, 2 hours to snow in the mountains in winter, not to hot or to cold, good gun laws in all 3 states, mostly red in the country.
The temperature is nice, however.
Fortunately, Texas is not like California would do desalination plants to deal with any water shortages.
I understand the natives there are fairly laid-back, but do you not believe they secretly resent you? And don't you quietly fear the long term stability of the country as a whole?
Take a long look at Northern Alabama, especially the greater Huntsville area.
I was born and raised in South Central Oklahoma. Graduated high school in Ardmore. Graduated University of Oklahoma. The military brought me to Huntsville. I retired there.
Politics similar to Oklahoma. Alabama is a shall issue state. Very similar to Eastern Oklahoma with great recreational opportunities along the Tennessee River. Alabama taxes are low with major deductions. Social Security and government pensions including military are not taxed. Depending upon your income level, may 2% or less state taxes.
We considered moving back to Oklahoma when we retired and I do at times miss the state but it was a good decision to move here. Even OU and Texas are joining the SEC, why not you?
Questions here or by private message.
I should have added that Huntsville is one of the fastest growing high tech centers in the US. However, you can go 20 miles away from the courthouse and you’ll find some very rural areas. Gun manufacturers moving into this area too. Huntsville is fast becoming one of the nations premier areas for health care access as well.
I don’t know - maybe Idaho (a nice conservative state) or one of the Dakotas (at least one of them is pretty conservative).
SoDak west of the river is gorgeous (Black Hills). East of the river, not so much.
Would you recommend the Oklahoma panhandle? Always been curious.
Las Vegas is great. Summer unbearable bought house in lake in Minnesota and spend 2or3 months in Minnesota best of all possible worlds
... or, you could move to my town in the mountains of Sedalia, CO. Every winter day looks like a Christmas card and the fall foliage last for three solid months. Daily deer sightings, monthly elk sightings, and bear twice a year. Politics are deep red with one of the most popular conservative saloon/restaurants in the entire state. The back roads to the river and Rockies here are absolutely prehistoric, with almost year round monster trout via fly or spinner. Decent cabins start at $300k with homes starting in the $500k range. 300 sunshine days per year in Colorado.
