Ski resort to retire name to avoid mental health connotation

SOUTH POMFRET, Vt. (AP) — A small ski area in Vermont has announced that it’s retiring its name, Suicide Six, this summer amid growing concerns about the insensitive nature of the historical name.

The resort said on its website on Tuesday that it shares those concerns and “embraces the increasing awareness surrounding mental health.”

“The feelings that the word ‘suicide’ evokes can have a significant impact on many in our community,” the resort statement said.

A new name will be announced in the coming weeks for the ski area in South Pomfret, near Woodstock, which opened in 1936 and is home of the Fisk Trophy Race, a rite of passage for competitive skiers, according to the resort’s website.

“The Suicide Six Ski Area has an enduring legacy spanning nearly nine decades, and it is vital that the name better represents and celebrates what makes it a beloved and vibrant part of this community,” the website said.

“Donner Pass is next.”

If there was a “Donner Pass” snack bar it would be kinda amusing...

;-)

Um, you can’t call a ski run a “slope” any more, either. <<<

Should be "m", rise over run. ;)

Lol. Ape hangers. I wonder who invented those stupid things. They are real popular with the local Harley crowd now. Seems like most non-tourers have them. I tried them back in 1972 when I had a chopper. I rode around with them for an hour and took them off. Not just stupid but dangerous. Now I look at ape hangars like I do Biden stickers. They indicate that the user is stupid and needs to be avoided. They were just as bad on bicycles.

Yes...I am surprised it hasn’t been banned yet. I don’t know how they are going to deal with the slope of a curve in math.

I was working with a woke Gen X guy, and I asked him to hand me a pair of dykes to cut some wires with, holding out my hand, and he completely froze up. When the “diagonal cutters” were not forthcoming, I looked at him, and his face was frozen and he began stuttering.

Good gosh. This is what we have come to. The fruit of the evil Left.

I’ve skied there many times...it’s pretty intense. Along with Mad River Glen (Ski it, if you can). The eastern blue powder (ice) makes these hills very difficult.

Hahahahahahahahaha

Rise...Run...those will be banned too.

'It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is in the verbs and adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns that can be got rid of as well. It isn't only the synonyms; there are also the antonyms. After all, what justification is there for a word which is simply the opposite of some other word? A word contains its opposite in itself. Take "good", for instance. If you have a word like "good", what need is there for a word like "bad"? "Ungood" will do just as well -- better, because it's an exact opposite, which the other is not. Or again, if you want a stronger version of "good", what sense is there in having a whole string of vague useless words like "excellent" and "splendid" and all the rest of them? "Plusgood" covers the meaning, or " doubleplusgood" if you want something stronger still. Of course we use those forms already. but in the final version of Newspeak there'll be nothing else. In the end the whole notion of goodness and badness will be covered by only six words -- in reality, only one word. Don't you see the beauty of that, Winston? It was B.B.'s idea originally, of course,' he added as an afterthought.

A sort of vapid eagerness flitted across Winston's face at the mention of Big Brother. Nevertheless Syme immediately detected a certain lack of enthusiasm.

'You haven't a real appreciation of Newspeak, Winston,' he said almost sadly. 'Even when you write it you're still thinking in Oldspeak. I've read some of those pieces that you write in The Times occasionally. They're good enough, but they're translations. In your heart you'd prefer to stick to Oldspeak, with all its vagueness and its useless shades of meaning. You don't grasp the beauty of the destruction of words. Do you know that Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller every year?'

Winston did know that, of course. He smiled, sympathetically he hoped, not trusting himself to speak. Syme bit off another fragment of the dark-coloured bread, chewed it briefly, and went on:

'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten. Already, in the Eleventh Edition, we're not far from that point. But the process will still be continuing long after you and I are dead. Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller. Even now, of course, there's no reason or excuse for committing thoughtcrime. It's merely a question of self-discipline, reality-control. But in the end there won't be any need even for that. The Revolution will be complete when the language is perfect. Newspeak is Ingsoc and Ingsoc is Newspeak,' he added with a sort of mystical satisfaction. 'Has it ever occurred to you, Winston, that by the year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation as we are having now?'

'Except-' began Winston doubtfully, and he stopped.

I still call them dykes...and I get the “look” also. I remark that they were called dykes before lesbians took that mantle.

I know...see my post above. Sigh. The Left accuses us of this kind of thing, but that is, of course...projection.

In retrospect, I found it hilarious, the frozen look on his face, but in retrospect, I also realize I shouldn’t have found it amusing.

ICBW, but I think every neighborhood had a Suicide Hill no matter when or where you were growing up.

I do it now simply because I refuse to be pried off my position. I was taught by an old electrician who called them dykes and simply adopted it as the industry standard. Some years ago I was chastised for calling them dykes and that it was insensitive.

I responded that it was common usage and I am offended that those who have no expertise are going to dictate the terms.

HR was pretty incensed but realized that I wasn’t having any of it. It is my work that generates the products and innovations that allow them to keep their market position and that those assigned to my area need to adapt to the world as I see it.

Skiers and Skiing equipment got a lot better.
What used to be Suicide Six is now an easy family friendly small ski resort.
Maybe they are just trying to change the name to attract beginner skiers who may be scared by the name?

Good move for VT. Mammoth Mountain in CA has Paranoid Flats, a very steep run, that needs a name change.
