A new breakthrough in biology allows scientists to grow food without sunlight

UC Riverside and the University of Delaware say they have found a method to bypass the need for biological photosynthesis, allowing them to create food without sunlight via artificial photosynthesis...

The researchers...used a two-step electrocatalytic process to convert carbon dioxide, electricity, and water into acetate, which is the main component in vinegar.

They then applied the acetate to food-producing organisms in the dark, causing these organisms to grow.

UC Riverside researchers...say they can combine their method with solar panels to generate the electricity required to power the electrolysis. This would increase the conversion efficiency of sunlight into food by up to 18 times compared to some foods.

The researchers also optimized their electrolyzer to produce the highest levels of acetate ever produced in an electrolyzer to date. What's more, they found that crop plants, including cowpea, tomato, rice, green pea, and tobacco, all have the potential to be grown in the dark using the carbon from acetate.

...a large variety of food could be produced in the dark using their method, including green algae, yeast, and fungal mycelium...

Yum!

Cool - send all the libtards to the dark side of the moon so we can live in peace 🤪

Mushrooms. You keep them in the dark and feed them sh!t.

Kinda reminds me of the government and media.

Good to know in case the sun ever dies we can grow food. /sarcasm

How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your mycelium?

or just grow crickets to make flour

probably cheaper

Sounds like a scientific version of a Rube Goldberg contraption, i.e., making something complicated that is really quite simple. I'll continue to prefer the old-fashioned method of using sunlight to grow things.

Though I suppose that if the “food” is being produced deep in a lunar lava tube, solar panels on the surface would provide energy 24/7.

is the end product exactly the same in every aspect...nutrition, calories, minerals...I have to believe the sun gives more than heat and light to plants.

If Yellowstone were to erupt the survivors will need to utilize this method for about 6 years afterward.

Especially powered by the solar panels they mentioned.

Anyone else find it odd they mentioned without sun and solar panels in the same solution?

Solar panels can power grow lights. Why would we need this method if we have access to either sunlight or electricity?
