What would it look like if America split? Is it possible for the United States of America to separate into two countries in less than fifty years?

The overwhelming evidence present in the public domain today strongly suggests that the United States of America will separate into two countries in less than fifty years.

Here is the scenario concept. The conservative and progressive sides of America today see each other as a lifeguard and a drowning victim. Neither side will keep the other from drowning when push comes to shove. The only option is for the lifeguard to let go of the drowning victim. This event is the physical separation. The conceptual separation has been playing out for about three decades.

The topics of abortion, gun rights, balanced budgets, central bank digital currencies, immigration, and free speech, either alone or together, can all be set aside with assurance they are not the reasons for the pending dissolution of the country. The single reason for the U.S. going into parts is free choice.

The U.S. will not change to a bordered country such as the Soviet Union, since geography has 50% of its border bound by water and the other 50% absent of both a northern and southern border. Ask Canada and Mexico how immigration control is going for them lately. It is unlikely there will be mass deporting of citizens due to the risk of those deported coming back with a vengeance, helped by whatever country accepts them. Ask Germany and Russia how that worked out for them during World War II.

A recent venture capitalist article indicates how geography, demographics, and capitalism intersect to likely help form the two new countries.

A country needs two tangible components to survive: trade and defense. Trade for all material things necessary to exist in both war and peace. Defense for continuance during and after an armed conflict.

If one looks at the red-blue counties map, there is no viable way to ‘split’ the country. Most blue areas are the metro areas.

Also, if it did split by state, leftists would still move to the red states when they get tired of living in the messes they made in the blue states. That is what they do. That is how states like Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and others used to trend right and now trend left. Even Texas is wobbly with Houston, Dallas and Austin being far from ‘red’.

And areas cycle over time. That is what happened to the old solid Democrat southern states. Most of them are solidly Republican — now. Reagan’s California was Republican. New York state used to be staunchly Republican.

Unlikely.

The brits couldn’t win a war in colonies they owned overseas.

A repeat event would not have been sucessful.
France? Maybe for a short time, but they never would have managed to keep it.

If the United States splits up the progressives/leftists/socialists/communists/whatever and whoever they really are, win a major campaign in the war for control. After that, they will continue the war for control in the areas they didn’t win this time.

Marxists would never allow a split as it would mean that there are still free people on the planet. They desire to keep everyone under their thumb.

This is all whacked. The most likely thing is that city states will emerge like DC is trying to do.

I can easily visualize the country of Los Angeles including most of the urban suburbs and the coastal south of California. It is equally easy to visualize a northwest alliance of Seattle, Portland and the bay area looking for autonomy.

On the east coast you have NYC and suburbs, they are already acting like they are their own country. You have the liberal ministates like Rhode Island , New Hampshire, Vermont and Connecticut that pretty much think the civilized world revolves around them.

The rest of the country is pretty solid with similar values except a Madison Wi, Detroit and Chicago corridor in the great lakes area which also have the disease of liberalism rampant in their governments.

I wish they would because we could declare war and blast them away and then we could be one nation under God again!

How does something like this ever happen?

It happens all the time in history - sometimes on peaceful terms, sometimes through violence. The Roman Empire peacefully split in two in 286 AD, but there was a big war between the two states 25 years later.

Would states try to secede from the union? Would groups of states try to secede from the union?

South Carolina's state legislature voted to succeed from the United States in 1860. Ten other southern states followed in 1861.

Would our union dissolve, similar to how the Soviet Union dissolved?

Probably not. As governor of Russia, Boris Yeltsen declared independence from the Soviet Union after a group of hardline communists put Gorbachev under house arrest. The Soviet Union couldn't survive without the mother country.

As I understand it, the constitution has provisions for adding new states, but no provision for states to leave the union.

Correct!

Which brings us back to how would this, legally and constitutionally, ever be able to occur?

That's the big question, isn't it? After all, the United States is an illegal entity. It didn't have the authority to break away from Great Britain.

The only breakup that makes sense is statehood for the major metropolitan areas. The Left would get some new Senators, but lose influence over vast rural areas - so they would be unlikely to willingly accept such an arrangement.

Actually, the coastal areas of those states would split off.

This would be more of a county thing, rather than whole states. California is mostly liberal counties on the coast and conservative rural counties in the center and east.

Whatever county Las Vegas is in might join, but no way the rest of the state.

30 + comments and no one listed Kurt Schlichter’s : The People’s Republic?

Witty story of how the US splits up. Pretty good read. The second book is better. And so on.

Clever, how the writer introduces a novel, confusing term without first exactly defining it, and - especially - explaining how it is at all relevant to the discussion!

Good way to string the reader along!
