Township board passed ordinance requiring stores to either get their carts or pay $25 per three-pack
CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A drive down Gratiot Avenue in Chesterfield Township means a lot of traffic. Still, lately, it is an unusual eyesore because the smart bus runs on that corridor where there are many shopping centers, and shopping carts find their way into large and unsightly piles.
The township is saying enough is enough.
Local 4 Business Editor Rod Meloni sat in a smart bus stop kiosk at 23 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue. While there, he said many people’s only concern was whether the busses were running on time, but in the township, the plethora of empty shopping carts is concerning, which the township board decided it needed to handle.

One local suburb figured out the solution to this problem—put the bus station in the shopping mall parking lot!
Bingo!..We have a winner!
“put the bus station in the shopping mall parking lot!”
At this location there are major shopping areas on all 4 corners and buses going N/S & E/W, so it would be difficult. However, a single bus stop for all would buses would at least centralize the carts.
“The answer is simple, if they don’t have the sensors to keep their carts close by, put a $5 bounty on them.”
Won’t work IMHO as scammers will take the carts and then return it for the bounty.
If the fine is costlier than sending a flunky out to retrieve the cart, guess what the smart businesses will do?
I would have been tempted to gently place my cart on top of their car.
That darn Bubbles.
Returning and refurbishing carts would be a suitable project for those penalized with community service. Coordinate and perform as often as needed.
Umm…nothing like chrome plating particles to enhance the flavor of your grilled meat.
You outlined multiple ways the businesses can police this issue. In the end the carts are their property, and they need to handle it.
The stores need to team up with the bus line to have a bus stop right on the property
Here in California the hobos call it a RV.
Government should require stores to offer free home delivery so the shoplifters are not forced to steal carts.

I worked in a plating factory. We did BBQ grills at one time. After seeing all the chemicals they dip into, I don’t use them. Cleaners, hydrochloric acid, nickel, zinc, brite dip, and dirty rinses
Meant to say BBQ grills go through nickel then chrome. Since they don’t get baked after plating, the acid is still in the steel
I clicked on this very vital thread for the Bubbles references.
“Holy -—— boys it’s cart nirvana...!”

Banning bus stops?
I’ve actually given this some thought. Sell the carts to the customers, return the cost when it is returned to the store.
That doesn’t work, the guys will steal carts then bring them back. Steal 10 in the morning, 10 in the evening, make a cool $100
