View comments A mother has told of her mid-air terror after her teenage daughter blacked out and suffered an allergic reaction at 30,000 feet on a British Airways when a passenger opened a packet of peanuts on board.
Joanna Jones, 39, was flying to London from Antigua when her 14-year-old daughter Poppy needed oxygen and two EpiPen shots during the nightmare eight-hour flight after suffering a severe reaction to the nuts.
As Poppy's condition worsened, a quick-thinking nurse on board dashed to help - while the captain considered making an emergency landing.
Eventually the pilot landed the plane safely at Gatwick and Poppy was rushed to hospital.
Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, Joanna said: ’It was a nightmare for all of us and I really thought she might die.

No.
How do you know it was "almost-death of a child"?
How can you tell the difference between somebody play acting they are in crises, the mother encouraging them to pour on the drama, and screeching all the while about her daughter dying?
How can you tell fake drama from reality? I can't, but given the distances involved and the fact that it was merely an odor of peanuts, I find it highly unlikely that the girl was ever in any real danger.
And if you think mothers won't create fake illnesses or over dramatize real illnesses, there is quite a lot of history showing us that they will indeed do this. I believe they even did a television show about a mother who kept telling everyone her daughter was sick or had cancer or something.
There are a lot of these type drama queens out there, and whether the girl was in any real danger we shall never know because that's private medical information, but anyone that sensitive (if there really is such a thing as being *that* sensitive) should travel in a plastic bubble where they can control the air supply.
God only knows she might accidentally walk down a boulevard which features restaurants cooking with peanut oil and thereby accidentally kill herself.
“And there has certainly been an increase in peanut allergies since the 80’s.”
Starting in the 1960’s the pharmaceutical companies started using peanut oil in vaccines. They call it by another name just as they’ll say they don’t use mercury in their vaxxes but then they admit they use thimerosal, which is made from mercury.
It’s entirely possible that injecting children with peanut oil can provoke an allergic condition.
The passenger may have brought his own. They asked him twice not to eat them.
I have been on flights where they said “we will not be serving any nuts on this flight because of a sever peanut allergy, and we ask you not to open them if you brought your own”
that is because you are limited
Listen, I’m not saying the peanut eater isn’t a jerk. I’m saying as a parent, you need to understand people will be selfish jerks, and protect your child without infringing on everyone else.
Also, if this child was so sensitive, who knows if she was having a reaction to the jerk’s peanuts or peanut dust from a previous flight?
I hope that the offending passenger “fell” into the fists of his fellow passengers at least a couple dozen times. Regardless of why there are some people who are do allergic to peanuts, or how that might inconvenience those of us who aren’t allergic at all, the guy was told TWICE not to open the package, but did it anyway. That was no accident. He should also be charged with attempted manslaughter, and sued for the girl’s medical expenses and suffering. What a complete POS!
So much for the great airline hepa filter that filter out cold viruses.
When dealing with the stridor respirations of someone in anaphylaxis it is not just an anxiety attack.
You know.
Exactly.
or it was a setup , wait and see if she sues
good call
Bingo.
Probably because when they explained to him that someone on board had a peanut allergy, they assumed that he was a decent human being and would stop. They were wrong, he was an asshole.
So what do when you walk down ths aile at the supermarket that has the peanuts? Or you just don’t. What if a new supermarket and you get ambushed?
I have no idea where peanut and other nut allergies have come from. Never heard of them growing up but have 2 kids who are highly allergic.
This peanut-eating passenger is a jerk, but I am also of the mind that someone with life-threatening health complications like this should seriously consider staying the hell away from crowds of people.
No one had chicken pox parties in the 50s through 70s. Kids normally caught it at school.
in the ninties and oughts there were parties because the chickenpox daycare vax became widely used then mandatory.
Did they check the kids stomach to see it she ate anything with peanuts ?
“It’s more likely the mother’s hysteria induced a panic attack in the kid.”
Yes, I’m thinking there’s more than a slight chance that Munchausen- and/or Munchausen-by-proxy syndrome are at work here, with a little psychosomania thrown in for good luck.
If mommy’s name were Karen, it would be perfect.
