Protein supplement helps control Type 2 diabetes (Within one week, 15 grams of whey protein before meals = “Glucose levels…much better controlled” & “Two more hours of normal levels” a day)
Medical Xpress / Newcastle University / BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care ^ | May 27, 2022 | Dr. Daniel West et al

Drinking a small amount of whey protein before meals has been shown to help people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugars.

In a study, which holds potential for dietary management of the condition, people with type 2 diabetes drank a pre-made shot before meals which contained a low dose of whey protein. They were monitored for a week as they went about normal daily life.

To compare the potential benefits of whey protein, the same participants also spent a week drinking a control shot that contained no protein in order to measure the results against each other.

Results from continuous glucose monitoring revealed that glucose levels were much better controlled when taking the whey supplement before meals. On average, they had two hours extra per day of normal blood sugar levels compared to the no protein week. In addition, their daily blood glucose levels were 0.6 mmol/L lower compared to when they consumed the supplement without any protein.

Dr. Daniel West said: "While previous studies for a few hours in the lab have shown the potential for this dietary intervention, this is the first time that people have been monitored as they go about normal life.

"We believe the whey protein works in two ways, firstly, by slowing down how quickly food passes through the digestive system and secondly, by stimulating a number of important hormones that prevent the blood sugars climbing so high.

18 people with type 2 diabetes consumed a small drink—in a 100 ml shot- with 15 grams of protein 10 minutes before breakfast, lunch and dinner over seven days and remained on their prescribed diabetes medication. Continuous glucose monitoring automatically tracked blood glucose levels over the course of the week.

Whey protein is a well-utilized protein source.

Whey protein concentrate still has some lactose and casein, the main protein component of milk.

If you are lactose intolerant, whey protein isolate may have fewer lactose grams in it, per serving.

Interesting. But not inexpensive. Cheapest I can find is about $23 for a 10 day supply. IF it works.

From Costco.com, 45 grams a day of “Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein” would last nearly 57 days at a cost of $1.11/day ($62.99 a bag).

I know that stuff tastes pretty good, too.

Different brands of whey powder have different flavors. Some are ok, others taste like vomit.

Bob’s Red Mill has the best flavor of the ones I’ve tried.

Metamucil (sugar free) does the same. Not many know about it, Even some doctors seemed surprised when told. Works for hubby. T2 controlled for several years. I think the dr put him on Metformin first but that one is not good. Gone up in price, but large amount seems cheaper than this.

In May 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)Trusted Source recommended that some makers of metformin extended release remove some of their tablets from the U.S. market. This is because an unacceptable level of a probable carcinogen (cancer-causing agent) was found in some extended-release metformin tablets. If you currently take this drug, call your healthcare provider. They will advise whether you should continue to take your medication or if you need a new prescription.

Metamucil works extremely well; I’ve been using it for 4yrs, since I was declared a Type 1 diabetic; now Type 2.

I’m concerned about the 2nd part of your post — Metformin being a carcinogen. Do you have anything further on it?

I chose this site when I searched Metformin.

https://www.healthline.com/health/diabetes/metformin-side-effects

I think it some side affect on H=hubby and he had to stop it. That’s when his doc took him off and suggested Metamucil

It was a contaminant, not the active ingredient itself. Many different capsule and tablet medications have been hit by this.

Thanks.
Mfgr of the Met 1,000 ER is Granules Labs, in India, and they’ve now been cleared from their 2020 voluntary recall. I use Metamucil once-in-a-while, with no side effects from either product.

I got on this about 6 months ago.

I hadn’t touched the stuff in like 20 years cause it tasted like drinking chalk.

I must say, the taste has greatly improved in the last couple of decades...
