My major concern is the high chamber pressure, and consequent barrel wear.

Chamber pressure has little to do with barrel wear. Barrels wear mostly in the throat area which is the first couple inches forward of the chamber. It's primarily caused by heat and shoulder angle/throat length which controls the angle at which the gasses impinge the throat area during firing. Powder amount and type also have an effect. M16/M4 barrels have been chrome lined forever and I assume the new rifles will be the same. This greatly reduces barrel wear, almost eliminating it. It's almost impossible to wear out a chrome lined barrel. Even in wartime the average infantry rifle isn't shot nearly enough to worry about barrel wear, far more wear is caused by excessive cleaning than shooting. Even if you could manage to wear out the barrel of the new round, which isn't likely, barrels are cheap and easily replaced.

Of all the things to worry about with the new rifle, barrel wear is far, far down the list.

(Maybe there is such a one; I don’t know.)

I can't believe there is anything you do not know, Yogi.

You should tell us more about yourself and your life experiences.

Right you are on every point. We NEVER (or only very rarely...I never did) fired full auto even with the 5.56. After firing the M-14 on full auto realized that was never to be repeated...but the 14 FELT and HANDLED like a RIFLE. I missed it.

A Mini-14, beefed up to handle the 6.8x51 w/good sights and synthetic stock, sounds ideal. (Never much cared for pistol grip stocks and “weak” butt stocks). As for recoil, if you find it difficult to handle, join the Air Force or Navy.

Infantry is a different animal altogether, from Grunts to SF. Recoil is part of the deal.

The CMP will get all the old M4’s! Yeah.

And we civilians can get them cheap ... right????

Follow the money. The cost to switch this completely will make someone(s) very rich. Whereas the transition to 300 blackout by changing only barrels and magazines would not enrich some retired generals yet be a much more viable transition with much reduced recoil and barrel lives.

Well thanks for the 411. I meant the chamber throat when I said “barrel”, I should have been clear on that. I’m a shooter, not an armorer, so I am not familiar with what chamber pressure ACTUALLY DOES. Again, thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

Wow.

Do you realize what the range of a 300 blackout is? I hunt deer with a suppressed 300 blackout so I can tell you....about 80 yards. Beyond that it falls apart and is practically useless, yet you want to replace the entire inventory of infantry rifles with it? I want to be on the side of whoever's fighting you when the next war breaks out.

The 300 blackout kicks about the same as the 5.56, which is practically none in either case. Barrel life is a non-issue, if you can wear out a 5.56 barrel or a 300 blackout barrel then you've shot 1000X more than the average soldier will shoot in his career. I'm on my fourth 22-250 barrel after shooting untold thousands of rounds at prairie dogs and it's not particularly a barrel burner round. If you want to wear out a barrel load a 220 swift to the hilt and shoot it until the barrel almost glows. You're not going to wear out a chrome lined military M16/M4 barrel in your or my lifetime, and I doubt anyone will be able to wear out a barrel of the new round. It's a non issue.

300 AAC or blackout cannot penetrate level 4 armor it lacks the energy even at the muzzle. Neither can any of the 5.56 black tip rounds. The whole reason to go up to a 6.8mm sized bullet is it carries the kinetic energy needed to 600 meters to penetrate level 4 armor. This is also why you need 80,000 psi if you want to use a shorter barreled rifle. As was pointed out this also has a gas piston not the crap self impingment. Finally the infantry gets a real battle rifle not the toy sized M4. Anyone who has ever lit off a M14 in full auto knows that rifle means business. This round trumps the 7.62x51 mm by a good bit it should be a stone cold man killer with the streamlined 6.8 mm and fast twist rate you can send sleek high BC bullets waaaaaaaayyyy out there the 6.5 creedmore stays supersonic to nearly a mile and this round adds 30% more bang that a creedmore. To bad at 80k psi you have to use steel cases which means no reloading. The military doesn’t care about reloading every round is a single use item always has been. Used military brass is never reloaded by the military they gather it up in training and sell it for scrap. The Russians and the Chinese have used steel cases exclusively for decades they don’t even bother to field brass cases ammo steel is cheaper.

I built a custom 300BLK SBR with a 10.5 inch barrel because the powder is fully burned at 9.5 inches. The 10.5 barrel leaves room for a suppressor when shooting subsonic rounds without being too long. Picking the right gas block position is also finicky. Supersonic rounds make plenty of gas for the carbine gas port, but the subsonics do better with a pistol gas port placement. I built with the carbine gas port since those barrels were easily sourced in 2015. I can buy an off the shelf upper today, so no need for a custom build.

Mine is a remington M700 300 blackout with 16.5” barrel. I use it to hunt deer and it being a bolt action means I can run faster burning powders which are quieter and not worry about port pressure in an AR platform. The AR’s can be particular about powders when running subsonic ammo because you’ve got to make sure you’ve got enough pressure at the gas port to cycle the action as you know. With the bolt action I don’t have to worry about any of that.

I’ve been in the market for another carrier.
Even the Level 3 Stuff I am looking at is rated to stop 5.56.

Just bring back the M1-Garand and be done with it.

Just bring back the M1-Garand with a detachable magazine and be done with it.
