THE US ARMY announced they are replacing the trusty M4 and the 556...with this monstrosity.
Which is our beloved M14 - couldn't agree more. Damn thing fires every time you pull the trigger, hits way the hell out to 5-600 meters, and murderous in full auto (fired from the prone with a bipod and that folding buttplate for control).
And, as a bonus, you can beat the enemy to death with the rifle and not have it shatter like the toy M16.
According to the link below, the rifle can fire a 135gn hybrid match bullet at 3000fps muzzle velocity.
Using JBM ballistics calculator (Link below), the bullet is supersonic out to 1000 yards. Out of a 16inch barrel, that is awesome.
For those of you with plenty of range time but less time in combat, it means more hits per round fired over the full range of enemy engagements - from point blank to over half a mile, which covers the many distances we engage and fight the enemy. Best of all, our armed forces will have a round that can punch through body armor, helmets, walls, sandbags, trees and much more.
For the very conservative army acquisition system, this is amazing, since most of them would go back to the Springfield Trapdoor, if given the chance.
This new weapon system will extend the reach of the soldier/Marine and finally begin to make use of all of the developments of state-of-the-art ballistic research.
The old "spray and pray" is dead!

The M16 was a very good weapon if cleaned and handled correctly.
My point is how often a new weapon was bought and issued to our military. Then,the new weapons get trash talked until they become SOP.

Funny how when the 5.56 came about the top brass could not say enough good about it. Lightweight, smaller cartridge for more rounds, less weight and size to transport, less recoil, less lethal but more debilitating.
Maybe like some said earlier, there is more body armor out there now and this could penetrate, but I ‘don’t know the terminal ballistics of 5.56 vs 6.8

Yeah, but they didn't have to stake their lives on the damn thing like we did. Apparently, they were in such a hurry to get that thing into our hands, that they completely omitted the operational testing part - with the ammo they were issuing with it - so we were stuck with a weapon that jammed horribly in the middle of firefights, had ridiculously unusable sights, had a safety with a too-strong detent, and stocks that shattered when struck.
I guess somebody made money off the deal, didn't they?
Sounds like there's going to be a fire sale on surplus govt. ammo. There will be a glut before there is a shortage.

The Japanese used the 6.5X50 for their Type 38 rifles and they had a 139 grain Spitzer bullet that launched at 2,500 feet per second. A bit of an antique at the start of WWII but deadly and had the added benefit of having very little smoke/muzzle flash from those long-barreled rifles. It featured low recoil and deadly terminal effects. Several other nations used this weapon and caliber for decades.
The next most famous (and well thought of) 6.5 caliber is the 6.5X55 Swedish which is still prized for its gilt-edge accuracy but it is also an antique with a 140 grain bullet and a 2,400 FPS muzzle velocity.
The new army 6.5 really ramps up muzzle velocity to 3,000 FPS plus, so it really does outpace all the previous 6.5mm military calibers.
A little closer if the 6.5 Creedmoor with a case length of 48.7 mm and a muzzle velocity of 3,020 FPS and a reputation for excellent long-range accuracy. The 6.5 Grendel was considered for a while but it is a lighter bullet/shorter range round ("6.5 X 39").
