Retired Four Star General Barry McCaffrey who now serves as a "military analyst" for MSNBC tweeted out footage of fighting in Ukraine that was actually a clip from a video game.
On Monday, retired four-star general and MSNBC "military analyst" Barry R. McCaffrey posted a clip of video game footage to Twitter. Alongside it he claimed it was a display of strength from Ukraine's air defense. It's actually footage from a video game. The clip in question came from YouTube's "shorts" section, and is titled "Russian MiG-29's Get Shot Down By Air Defense System | Arma 3 #Shorts #Airdefense #Arma3."
ARMA 3 is an open world military tactical shooter game for PC published in September 2013. What's captured on video is two in-game jets being shot down by an air defense system set up on the ground. McCaffrey's tweet was deleted at some point after Benny Johnson pointed out the glaring mistake.
MSNBC’s “military analyst” is posting fake war videos from a video game.
Why is Left-Wing corporate media allowed to spread “misinformation” about a war, while they advocate for Censorship of Conservatives and Fact Checking of Memes? https://t.co/YDKGSkkvGV— Benny Johnson (@bennyjohnson) May 16, 2022
"Why is Left-Wing corporate media allowed to spread "misinformation" about a war, while they advocate for Censorship of Conservatives and Fact Checking of Memes?" he added.
"Russian aircraft getting nailed by UKR missile defense. Russians are losing large numbers of attack aircraft. UKR air defense becoming formidable," McCaffrey had originally tweeted. Hi @mccaffreyr3! Why did you delete this?pic.twitter.com/H7l9ht2bQj— Jack Posobiec ?? (@JackPosobiec) May 16, 2022
The 79-year-old is a regular MSNBC commentator who goes on-air to talk about the ongoing war in Ukraine. He recently told the show's hosts that Ukraine needs to "absorb new military technology" and called Russia's invasion a "strategic disaster."
General McCaffrey's colleague on the Council on Foreign Relations, Max Boot, was also spotted retweeting the four star general's misleading video.
Monday's gaffe is not the first time media pundits have mistaken video game footage as the real thing. At the onset of the war in late February, a tall tale arose claiming an ace fighter pilot called the "Ghost of Kyiv" was taking out Russian aircraft at an accelerated pace.
But as Kotaku discussed at the time, accompanying clips showcasing "Ghost of Kyiv" feats were actually from a "Digital Combat Simulator" video game released in 2013. USA Today published a fact check debunking rumors that viral comedian star Sam Hyde was not the "Ghost of Kyiv." Some people had claimed as much, and even Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois was briefly fooled by it.
Thanks for clarifying. Clearly I was too harsh.
McCaffrey was always the boot-licking globalist image of a military officer. That he’s on MSNBC says it all.
This was no “mistake”. This was a deliberate attempt to deceive and misinform.
He needs to be put over the coals for this outrage.
DHS says pointing out disinformation is now a form of disinformation; the latter to be persecuted to the fullest extent of the lawfare.
He is all of the above.
Either there are some newbies here on FR or this is some kind of meme...”Late breaking news...it’s fake!”...the news, that is!
charlatans and liars. Anyone remember the Kentucky Fourth of July where they said it was Turkey? Gulf of Tonkin? WMD’s? Oh and the Arab spring all because of the You Tube video?
I just can’t imagine how anyone can take CNN or MSNBC seriously.
They’re both just so... awful.
“Council on Foreign Relations”
America will need to undergo its own kind of “de-nazification” and this place will need to be among the first to be dismantled, brick-by-brick.
Retire you silly old geezer.
Is it real footage?
Let’s ask our aeronautical consultants,

Right now, Azovstal has assembled dozens of buses, military police, a lot of military equipment. There are also ambulances, including reanimobiles. The column stretched for several hundred meters. Just from there, the surrender is to be large-scale.

There about 200 frozen corps inside Azovstal
Of course it was a mistake. The video was not central to his point and posting a fake was embarrassing for him. That’s why he deleted it right away.
Plenty of real videos he could have used for illustration.
The general is a hack and you are naive.
The post was deleted because he got caught!! Wtf is wrong with you?
So why'd he use it then when it was clearly fake?
I already said - by mistake.
He thought it is real and fitting colorful illustration. These look quite real nowadays.
To the public, these men are members of a familiar fraternity, presented tens of thousands of times on television and radio as “military analysts” whose long service has equipped them to give authoritative and unfettered judgments about the most pressing issues of the post-Sept. 11 world.
Hidden behind that appearance of objectivity, though, is a Pentagon information apparatus that has used those analysts in a campaign to generate favorable news coverage of the administration’s wartime performance, an examination by The New York Times has found.
So he used a fake video to embellish his fake story.
The story isn’t fake. Russia doesn’t dare to fly over Ukraine.
