Justice Clarence Thomas on Friday compared the leak of fellow Justice's Samuel Alito's draft opinion, which would overturn abortion protections under Roe v Wade, to 'infidelity.'

Thomas, 73, said that at a conference that the leak would weaken the public's trust in the Supreme Court as an institution, calling the unauthorized disclosure of deliberations 'tremendously bad.'

In his remarks, the conservative justice, who has long called for overturning Roe, hinted that a liberal clerk may have leaked Alito's draft opinion, and lamented that partisan rancor has grown more entrenched on the high court.

Thomas pondered: 'I wonder how long we're going to have these institutions at the rate we're undermining them, and then I wonder when they're gone or destabilized what we will have as a country and I don't think the prospects are good if we continue to lose them.'

He continued: 'When you lose that trust, especially in the institution that I'm in, it changes the institution fundamentally. You begin to look over your shoulder. It's like kind of an infidelity – that you can explain it but you can't undo it,' reports Politico.

Thomas, a nominee of President George H.W. Bush, said it was beyond 'anyone's imagination' before the May 2 leak of the opinion that even a line of a draft opinion would be released in advance, much less an entire draft that runs nearly 100 pages.

Thomas, who has long said he believes the Roe decision should be overturned, was speaking at the Old Parkland Conference, a meeting of black conservatives, in Dallas where he was Friday's keynote speaker.

Following his speech, Thomas sat for a questions and answers session with John Yoo of Berkeley Law School.

Good point. I will take it one step further. No one should have any fear of stating their beliefs truthfully - no matter what they are.

What I mean is that there are two parts of the abortion conversation that I find appalling.

1. That so many innocent unborn lives are being taken.

2. That the “conversation” about this tragedy is built around deception and denial. Reason is not prevailing - even in our highest court, which should be the guardian of reason.

The second part is almost more disturbing and more threatening to our Republic than the first part - for if it is impossible to have an honest debate, then self governance is impossible.

I have tried to have conversations with “pro-choice” people, and you simply can’t reason with them. You can’t get them to follow basic rules of debate. You can’t pin them down on even the most basic assumption: when life begins.

If you ask that question, you either get a lie or you get avoidance. Suddenly the subject is diverted to “who should pay for unwanted babies?” or “Why is it a man’s business what a woman does with her own body?”

These are diversions from the real questions at hand: “Is an unborn baby a human being or not?” and “How is taking an innocent unborn human’s life different than taking any other innocent human life?”.

It is impossible to get a straight and honest answer from these people - even in the highest court of the land, where presumably their job is to think straight and hold us all accountable to reason and truth.

And that is a big problem.

Now that the dust has settled on this “leak” it’s crystal clear that the weasel John Roberts himself was responsible for leaking the Roe v Wade draft. Before the leak all of the justices but one had taken positions, and the clear majority supported overturning Roe v Wade. Roberts was attempting to convince the over-turners to uphold Roe v Wade for a little while longer in order to avoid riots. As if on que the leak caused demonstrations at the homes of the over-turner justices. The demonstrations turned out to be previews of what Roberts warned about.

Nothing Roberts does will surprise me. Yes, it is entirely possible that he is the leaker. This from the man who failed to uphold his oath to guarantee a "Republican form of government" in the 2020 elections.

When they find who did the leak, they should not just be dismissed, or even just disbarred, they should be sent to jail for 20 years without parole.

The only way that would happen would be if a staff member of a conservative judge leaked the draft of a leftist decision.

It's a two-tiered system. BLM and Antifa are allowed to loot and burn cities and throw molatov cocktails at cops, while people who showed up to a protest on Jan 6, 2021 and were waived into the capital building by cops who had unlocked the doors have been languishing in jail for over a year without any charges being filed against them.

What could be more churlish, immature and immeasurably base? Why is it that the instant Liberals get into positions of responsibility and authority, they feel that they MUST show the world their a&# ???

They have to go to jail, no way around it, them and all involved. I’ll wager good money that multiple folks are behind the leak. All credibility of the court is at risk now.

That’s how leftists “argue” about anything. Change the subject, non-sequiturs, and of course, ad hominem attacks (you’re racist!).

They have to do this because their positions are logically and morally indefensible.

Eventually they resort to violence as a final recourse. Nowadays that seems to be their first argument.

I’m sure someone at DU will think I’m racist for stating these facts.

What you say is true and I have observed the same.

A leftist will never tell you why they really take a position and try to convince you based on their sincerely held beliefs. Why? I believe it’s because a normal person would regard them as an evil and vile monster. And they know this.

In my mind, this means they are evil, and further, they themselves know it.

So they work to deceive us, which is why their arguments are so disjointed and shoddy. And no matter how many of these you run to ground with them, they never change their mind. Because we have never debated their true beliefs with them. And even if we had, I suspect we would discover their beliefs are faith based. And the exact opposite faith that most of us are familiar with.

Just a theory I’m pondering.

"Support for Roe v. Wade" means widely different things to different people.

But for nine special people, what "support for Roe" means is support for their right to rule without foundation in the Constitution or in the law, in other words, for their right to make shit up.

I'm sure Roberts CJ is a strong supporter of Roe in the latter sense, whatever he thinks about abortion.

And the Left is right to be terrified of Alito's draft opinion, since the basis for his decision is "no making shit up", and about 20 of their most precious decisions, decisions which are the foundation of their power, could all be done away with under the draft Alito standard.

That's why I suspect that the final decision will be 6-3 overturning Roe and Casey, but not founded on "no making shit up" but rather on "abortion is different".
