Arizona prison workers took 25 MINUTES to get an IV into death row inmate during execution: Expert says botched job is the sign of a 'desperate and unqualified executioner'

Executioners in Arizona needed 25 minutes to get an IV into a death row inmate to administer a legal injection in what one expert says is the sign of an 'unqualified executioner'.

Clarence Dixon, 66, was put to death on Wednesday at the state prison in Florence for his murder conviction in the 1978 killing of 21-year-old Arizona State University student Deana Bowdoin.

He was the first inmate to be executed in the state since 2014. It appeared to follow the state's execution protocol. After the drug was injected, Dixon's mouth stayed open and his body did not move. He was declared dead about 10 minutes later.

But death penalty experts on Thursday said the estimated 25 minutes it took medical staff to insert an IV into Dixon's body was too long.

The workers first tried, and failed to insert an IV into his left arm before they were able to connect it in his right one. They then opted to make an incision, known as a 'cutdown,' in his groin area for another IV line.

Deborah Denno, a Fordham Law School professor who has studied executions for more 25 years, said executions should take seven-to-ten minutes from the beginning of the IV insertion process until the moment the prisoner is declared dead.

'It's a sign of desperation [on the part of the execution team], and it's a sign of an unqualified executioner,' Denno said.

Before Dixon was put to death, the last execution in Arizona took place in July 2014, when Joseph Wood was given 15 doses of a two-drug combination over nearly two hours. Wood snorted repeatedly and gasped before he died. The process dragged on for so long that the Arizona Supreme Court convened an emergency hearing during the execution to decide whether to halt the procedure.

Florence is in Pinal County, Pinal County has an extremely compromised justice system, the corruption there runs deep.

Incompetent?

He’s dead, so I would surmise the executioner is far more competent than most other government employees.

Present POTUS and VPOTUS included . . .

So I assume that the claim is “a botched execution”. Basically,if the killer is dead then it wasn't botched, I couldn't care less if it took a 36 hours to get it in.

Actually happens quite a bit in hospitals. Cut downs are not frequent but not uncommon. The leftists are making drama out of nothing.

In their shoes I would give an I’m injection to put the inmate out. Then insert the iv needle or catheter and then the drugs

You’re absolutely correct. There were actually 4 methods of capital punishment, but stoning, as you noted, is the ONLY one that is a community activity (which I am all for).

One of my favorite Biblical tales is the story of the man who gathered wood on the Sabbath. A couple of Levites caught a man gathering wood on the Sabbath and brought him to Moses to see what his punishment should be. Moses told them, “It’s the Sabbath. Get outta here! Come back after Sabbath is over!” So they left and came back when Sabbath was over. “Moses,” they asked, “what shall his punishment be?”

“Put him to death,” Moses told them.
“Put him to death? He just gathered some wood.”
“Isn’t the punishment for murder death? Didn’t he murder the Sabbath? Put him to death.”

I like to believe that there were far reaching effects from this decision. First, the Levites were more judicious, and less full of themselves in the execution of their duties.
Second, after word spread around the camp(”He did what??? Just for gathering wood on the Sabbath!!!), while Moses lived, there were hardly any incidences at all of murder, adultery, stealing, or bearing false witness...’cause the people knew that Moses was remarkably strict, zealous even, about the Law.

In those days striking a parent, or just being disrespectful to one, was punishable by death by stoning. Society has degenerated a great deal since then.

Keep the Faith.

Deana Bowdoin was strangled, raped and stabbed.

It lasted more then 25 minutes.

He raped two more women after he killed Deana and stabbed one of them.

For these reasons my heart fails to bleed for him.

But I do object to lethal injection.

Gas is probably the quickest way to get rid of someone and if you use nitrogen it is almost painless.

I am not in favor of deliberate torture I just don't cry for rapists.

Lawyers require a check list. Time required to complete all items on the execution check list was 25 minutes

The Guillotine is simple, foolproof and reusable. The “sustainable” execution device.

Are they really trying to gin up sympathy for this murderous fiend?

The family of the victim should have been given carte blanche to do whatever the hell they wanted to him, imo.
Executions will never be pretty but they sure as hell protect society.

Not enough practice. Sort of like the macabre joke about axe wielders under Henry VIII and his daughter Elizabeth I.

Q: What did Mary, Queen of Scots get one more of than all of the wives of Henry VIII combined?

A: Axe strokes on the back of the neck.

Its not always easy to get an IV in, especially if the person has a lot of body fat or is an IV drug user.

I agree with the Fordham University lawyer. The execution should take more than 7-10 minutes...after conviction!!!

While I do agree it shouldn’t take 25 minutes to get an IV in...

Don’t think I’m crying a river that a murderer had to endure a little discomfort at the end.
