On April 20th, cyber agencies from the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom put out a joint Cybersecurity Advisory warning entities in their respective nations that because of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the world has a heightened risk of “malicious cyber activity.” It is now believed that there will likely be a Russian-initiated offensive directed at Ukraine’s allies, in particular those responsible for levying the sanctions that have been catastrophic to the Russian economy.
These dangers that are currently posed are not limited to attacks from state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat Groups (APTs), however. According to the advisory, several Russian non-government affiliated hacking gangs have “recently publicly pledged support for the Russian government.”
Some of these groups have also threatened to initiate cyber-attacks against government and private organizations that may have provided materiel support to Ukraine over the past couple of months. And since the outbreak of war, there have already been countless disruptive attacks against Ukrainian websites. Some of these attacks are believed to be carried out by sympathizers of the Russian military offensive.
These attacks have served to supplement Russian government efforts, as recent Russian hacks have included distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks in addition to malware and ransomware attacks against the Ukraine government and its domestic infrastructure.
“The SEC’s actions in the past year, paired with recently released rules, draw a line under the critical role of management and boards in protecting not just investors and customers, but also the sound functioning of American business,” according to Friso van der Oord, Senior VP at the National Association of Corporate Directors.

This emphasis on Russia should not blind us from the more dangerous Cyberattacks coming from CHINA!
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army has several divisions ( hiring tens of thousands of hackers ) dedicated to cyber warfare.
This has been documented by Bill Gertz in his book: “Deceiving the Sky: Inside Communist China’s Drive for Global Supremacy”
More concerned about Russian nuclear attacks
China is the one I worry about. Face it, the US isn’t making friends anywhere.
Our country is a shambles with that thing we have in the WH.
Our supply chain for food seems to be under cyber attack. But I blame the FBI, not Russia.
EMP attack could happen.
Pfffftttttt! You know how well we defeated the CONvid virus. :>}
It ain’t the Russians we have to worry about.
It’s the backdoors the CIA/NSA built into everything.
The US “intelligence community” is the the true enemy of the American people.
Weren’t American oil and gas companies hit with ransomware attacks within the last year, and the position of the Biden Administration was to just to just pay them off?
Personally I don’t believe it is the Russians, it is more likely that our very own Government is behind the majority of cyber attacks they claim are from the Russians
Don’t insult “things”.
Call it for what it is: a rutabaga.
I will keep that in mind.
Well, I’m sure we can defend against attacks to most of our military and key government cyber infrastructure. But most of the juicy targets are in the private sphere, and that is outside of the government’s ability to set up much of a preventative defense.
The Russians also have plenty of government-sponsored hackers, and really, I suspect the Russian ones are more talented as a rule. China, as always, favors quantity over quality, even when it comes to skill-based endeavors.
“the position of the Biden Administration was to just to just pay them off?”
Well, that’s the general position of pretty much every private company too. Almost everyone pays, because the ransom is less than the cost of the lost data. If nobody paid, the attacks would stop and hackers would find a new scam, but companies will continue to pay as long as it’s the least expensive option.
“Can the U.S. Defend Against Russian Cyber Attacks?”
Hell, the military under the democrats spends far more time in woke classes than on the rifle range or cyber defense. They would have to sub out these defenses.
