It's hard to resist the cuteness of a dog tilting their head when you talk to them or when they hear a strange sound. But this endearing trait may have a bigger purpose than merely looking adorable.
Scientists are still trying to get to the bottom of exactly why dogs tilt their heads and there isn't a ton of research yet on the topic. But there are some theories about why dogs engage in this behavior and what their head tilts could mean.

It’s a dog’s way of dialing up the cute-factor to 11.
I go with #4. =========
1. Your dog is attempting to see better
Dogs with long muzzles tend to tilt their heads more than those with flatter faces.
2. Your dog is listening more attentively
Your dog’s head-tilt might be signaling that they’re a good listener.
3. Your dog is trying to determine where a sound is coming from
Your floppy-eared dog might be more inclined to head-tilt. These ear flaps can interfere with sound transmission, making it difficult for your dog to get a sense of where a sound may be coming from.
4. Your dog likes the attention it gets them. Your dog might be doing it to make you smile. ....’aww’ and then lavish our dogs with affection and praise,” Stregowski says. “This tells our dogs they should definitely repeat the behavior so good things will happen.”
5. Your dog has an underlying medical condition
Like vestibular disease
I thought it was just my dog wondering why I do it in the toilet.
It proves that dogs are not trained automatons, but are capable of feelings, critical thinking and cause-and-effect reasoning, unlike Democrat voters.

My dog does that when hunting moles/voles in the front yard. She will sit still and tilt her head listening, move a little then do it again and again until she pounces and starts digging.
Took me a couple of tries before I could see it.
I didn’t have to tilt my head to see it.
I tilted my laptop.
Good grief, these are the experts?
Dogs is tilt their heads as they’re trying to understand, and they often do.
That’s why heads spin when Slow Joe and Heels-Up Harris speak.
It’s like dogs walking in circles prior to laying down. They learned this trait from their ancestors, it’s instinct as they walk in circles to create a bed in the tall grass/weeds to lay on.
That's how you know your wife isn't........LOL!
You speak truth, my friend.
It’s a direction finding mechanism.
Here’s an oddball off-the-wall theory I have about cats purring....
Most of available stuff on the internet says that cats purr but don’t really say why. The science of it is explained as a neural oscillator function in the brain that subconsciously (unintentional) causes the vibration in the neck.
I finally came to the conclusion (after having to clean up scads of my own cat’s hairball expulsions) that it is a ‘maintenance mode’ built into the cat that rhythmically stimulates next (gullet?) muscles to gather up and form hairballs so they are expelled more easily. Am I nuts? Thoughts? Cat people?
and this is exactly why the "head tilt" is more common amongst dogs than democrats
Swimmer’s ear.
Dogs don’t have the luxury of tilting the planet.
Cute puggies!
That’s good!
Thoughts? Cat people?
I never see them do it. All I know is I will come down stairs in the middle of the night or in the morning and STEP onto this COLD, WET GLOB of hair that mysteriously appeared overnight. I know which one it is, too, because of the color.
Why can’t they throw up on the kitchen floor instead of the damn carpet all the time?
One time she left a nice big, fat, juicy one on the stairs. I stepped on it and thought I was gonna break my neck…
I think the purring is them laughing in anticipation of just that happening.
