Tennessee GOP Gov. Bill Lee has invited the private conservative Hillsdale college to open 50 charter schools in his state that will teach so-called "anti-woke" curriculums.
The offer for Hillsdale, a liberal arts college with about 1,500 students in Michigan, to use public funds includes $32 million for charter facilities.
Hillsdale developed the "1776 Curriculum," a direct response to the New York Times' "1619 Project" about so-called Critical Race Theory, which in suggests American is inherently racist.
Hillsdale's version teaches students that America is "an exceptionally good country."
Critics of the 1776 Curriculum say it has an overly positive take on American history.
"It talks about the enormity of slavery, but in almost every case, everything that’s bad about America will be undone by what is good. Almost, literally, that American ideals will overcome whatever evils may be there," Sean Wilentz, a Princeton professor told the New York Times.
But Hillsdale has big plans to expand its network of classical public charter schools, which are publicly funded by privately run, that emphasize "the centrality of the Western tradition," and Lee is on board.
"For decades, Hillsdale College has been the standard-bearer in quality curriculum and in the responsibility of preserving American liberty," Lee recently told Tennessee lawmakers. "I believe their efforts are a good fit for Tennessee."
He calls his plan for charter school expansion part of an effort to help develop "informed patriotism" in Tennessee students.
Hillsdale has a network of 22 charter schools, which receive curriculums and training from the college. A large handful of additional schools are set to open shortly. Th schools have, thus far, produced higher-than-average SAT scored among their students, and produced acceptances to a number of prestigious colleges and universities.
The uber woke "prestigious" universities are ditching SAT score requirements for reasons like this. Being smart is so yesterday.
Wonderful and way overdue. It may catch on big time.
Hillsdale gets no government money and I’m afraid charter schools will get encroached on.
$50 million is just a drop in the bucket.
Good on this governor. We really need to shut down our public education system & go to a charter system. Let parents decide what kind of school they want to send they’re kids to.
We just beat back a $60 million levy for a new high school because the old one was in ‘bad repair.’ However, they were going to turn around & make that old school a middle school. Obviously not in that bad a shape. All because we’ve had a lot of new people moving in, which doesn’t necessarily translate to kids in school. The money lavished on education, to no good result, is a crime against the taxpayer.
But THIS will be GOVERNMENT money!
Good for Tennessee,
I love this so much!!!!
Kudos to my Tennessee!
There is one of these charter schools near my daughter. We are hoping the grandkids can get in....the oldest is only 3, but it is definitely time to plan for their proper education and my daughter and her husband are weighing all viable options
DeSantis and Lee realizing they will have no voter base in the future unless something is done to free our children from the indoctrination that has been occurring in public institutions for decades.
Public education as it now stands cannot be logically defended by conservatives.
Good on Lee. He realizes there are no good public schools.
Good news for once.
Its a smart move.
I’ve always been puzzled by philanthropists who give $hundreds of millions to their universities.
If you really want to make a difference - give $1 million each to 100 different (private) high schools.
American History should be taught from Kindergarten through Grade 12. When the students hit 12th grade, there is a lottery on which students get to work the elections. No more Democrats who have been doing it for 50+ years. Always a high school senior. This way everything they learned in 12 years of school gets put to use for the good of the country. Those selected receive partial college scholarships as part of serving their country.

I like Hillsdale College! It has some pretty interesting, informative articles.
‘Face
;o]
I’ve known people who sent their kids there, one of the parents was a public school teacher.
<>Hillsdale’s version teaches students that America is “an exceptionally good country.”<>
Charles De’Montesquieu, who had significant influence on our Framers, wrote that the first purpose of education in a republic is to teach love of country.
Way to go Hillsdale!
