Suggest a very reliable and durable can opener? (vanity)

Posted on 03/27/2022 9:35:57 PM PDT by Mount Athos

Friend put away my can opener where I didn't expect it. Made me realize I need a backup. Must be hand operated not electric

There was a Looney Tunes cartoon on this subject...

I bought a herky old school made in USA can opener, which solved my crappy offshore manual can openers issues. I also have pocket knife openers and the ol style levered opener like grandma used.

Growing up we had an electric opener that was hard to clean but it was a great cat call.

So is the “Fork Tailed Devil” as the Germans in Italy grew to call them. :0)

For those interested they are available here and elsewhere:

For real? Have FR folks become so woke they can’t even research their own can openers?

“German made can opener”

$31 is expensive...but that thing looks like the Jaws of Life. You could probably pass that on to your kids. Heck, I may just buy one. I can see it now at the will-reading...

“I want mom’s Bernina sewing machine.”

“You can have the sewing machine. I want mom’s can opener!”

I've got a P-38 and a P-51. P-51 is the same thing but a little bigger.

Use a hatchet. For technique, see W. C. Fields in “It’s a Gift”.

Asking ~ thousands of FReepers about a subject directly in their lived experience is the *best possible* research.

The TSA robbed me of the one I got back in 1970.

As I stated in my original post, “Made in Germany”. That’s why we paid the big bucks.

What, FR canโ€™t be a research resource? A lot of experience people here.

Well thanks again. I go out of my way to not purchase anything made in China - even a can opener - if there’s any alternative, even if it means paying more. One gets better quality anyway so it’s really a better deal if one just budgets for it.

Kitchenaid can opener (not electric). Works beautifully every time. About $10 at amazon or look for one at Homegoods or TJ Maxx.

I have two can openers both made in Switzerland. One is Zyliss and the other is Kuhn Rikon. They work beautifully and are lightweight and durable, and good looking too.

I’ll second the OXO brand. I’ve thrown away all the other manual can openers.

Last time I saw those were in boxes of C-rations in Korea in the 1950s. I kept one in my wallet for years but eventually lost it.
