Even moderate light exposure during sleep harms heart health and increases insulin resistance: study (Block light any way possible)
Medical Xpress / Northwestern University / Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences / JAMA ^ | Mar. 14, 2022 | Dr. Phyllis Zee, et al

Close the blinds, draw the curtains and turn off all the lights before bed. Exposure to even moderate ambient lighting during nighttime sleep, compared to sleeping in a dimly lit room, harms your cardiovascular function during sleep and increases your insulin resistance the following morning, reports a new study.

"The results demonstrate that a single night of exposure to moderate room lighting during sleep can impair glucose and cardiovascular regulation, which are risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and metabolic syndrome," said Dr. Phyllis Zee. "It's important for people to avoid or minimize the amount of light exposure during sleep."

"We showed your heart rate increases when you sleep in a moderately lit room," said Dr. Daniela Grimaldi. "Even though you are asleep, your autonomic nervous system is activated. That's bad. Usually, your heart rate together with other cardiovascular parameters are lower at night and higher during the day."

Investigators found insulin resistance occurred the morning after people slept in a light room. Insulin resistance is when cells in your muscles, fat and liver don't respond well to insulin and can't use glucose from your blood for energy. To make up for it, your pancreas makes more insulin. Over time, your blood sugar goes up.

Zee's top tips for reducing light during sleep

(1) Don't turn lights on. If you need to have a light on (which older adults may want for safety), make it a dim light that is closer to the floor.

(2) Color is important. Amber or a red/orange light is less stimulating for the brain. Don't use white or blue light and keep it far away from the sleeping person.

(3) Blackout shades or eye masks are good if you can't control the outdoor light. Move your bed so outdoor light isn't shining on your face.

Clap on, clap off. Even someone with dementia can get the hang of it.

I used to work rotating shifts. I actually considered building an air-conditioned, sound-proofed light-tight box I could sleep in, until I realized I was basically going to build a coffin.

Been using a $20 mask for awhile now. Great when the wife wants to watch TV or play with her iPad.

The Huberman Lab podcast who is a brain and neuro-hormonal researcher at Stanford got me into this.

I’d have to say that it has really improved my sleep.

Look, where I live, bats occasionally appear. I hate them. And then there is the issue of when they come flying (swooping around everything in the night. I keep that light on just to know what’s going on going on.

And when I get up every 90 minutes to go to the bathroom (night lights on) how does that fit in the grand scheme?

Our forefathers never left a candle burning before sleep.

Fire can be even more nasty to your health.

Great. Now old folks are going to fall down and break their shoulders and hips because they can’t see in the dark.

Hook up a motion sensitive nightlight under your bed.

My wife and I have been using sleep masks for years now, and they have definitely helped us.

How many retards turn on all kinds of lights outside only to go in, watch TV, and only return outside after sunrise.

I cannot sleep well if a light is on at night. If I need to get up to use the bathroom, I turn on the flashlight on my phone, so I can see where I’m going. On his side of the bed, my husband has a nightlight close to the floor. Even that bothers my sleep if it us not shadowed. Coincidentally, my blood sugars are in good control; his are not.

We use motion detection lights at floor level....I actually put tape over them to make them less bright...in our remodel I am contemplating floor light around vanity (motion detection)... and motion lights when leaving bed...
