Close the blinds, draw the curtains and turn off all the lights before bed. Exposure to even moderate ambient lighting during nighttime sleep, compared to sleeping in a dimly lit room, harms your cardiovascular function during sleep and increases your insulin resistance the following morning, reports a new study.
"The results demonstrate that a single night of exposure to moderate room lighting during sleep can impair glucose and cardiovascular regulation, which are risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and metabolic syndrome," said Dr. Phyllis Zee. "It's important for people to avoid or minimize the amount of light exposure during sleep."
"We showed your heart rate increases when you sleep in a moderately lit room," said Dr. Daniela Grimaldi. "Even though you are asleep, your autonomic nervous system is activated. That's bad. Usually, your heart rate together with other cardiovascular parameters are lower at night and higher during the day."
Investigators found insulin resistance occurred the morning after people slept in a light room. Insulin resistance is when cells in your muscles, fat and liver don't respond well to insulin and can't use glucose from your blood for energy. To make up for it, your pancreas makes more insulin. Over time, your blood sugar goes up.
Zee's top tips for reducing light during sleep
(1) Don't turn lights on. If you need to have a light on (which older adults may want for safety), make it a dim light that is closer to the floor.
(2) Color is important. Amber or a red/orange light is less stimulating for the brain. Don't use white or blue light and keep it far away from the sleeping person.
(3) Blackout shades or eye masks are good if you can't control the outdoor light. Move your bed so outdoor light isn't shining on your face.

I started wearing a good sleep mask. I thought it would bother me, but it doesn’t.
What about daytime naps?
WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!
(Of something.... sometime...)
Years ago I decided that in my dream home the bed would occupy the central portion of a large, double entry walk in with the well lit bathroom and laundry room behind it that had no windows and the outer room, which would normally be the bedroom, would be like a personal sitting room and study with lots of bookshelves and light.
Low light for sleep bump.
Great. Now old folks are going to fall down and break their shoulders and hips because they can’t see in the dark.
Take all advice from “experts” with a warehouse-full of salt.

14 March: Daily Mail UK: Is this the real reason heart attacks are soaring? Astonishing Covid data emerges after the sudden heart attack deaths of Shane Warne and Kimberley Kitching
Warne and Kitching were both aged 52 when they suffered heart attacks
Ex-AFL player Dean Wallis also suffered heart attack aged 52, but survived
States least affected by Covid have highest rates of heart health checks
By PADRAIG COLLINS
The sudden heart attack deaths of cricket legend Shane Warne and Senator Kimberley Kitching exposed how many people have missed out on getting health checks during the pandemic.
That they were both aged 52 and died within days of each other has made people in middle age take notice, added to by the heart attack also just suffered by ex-AFL player Dean Wallis.
Wallis, eerily also aged 52, survived and had emergency heart surgery...

I wear it for naps - it needs to be a good one that blocks all light.
Old people are smarter than you over reacting to this.
Many of them just wear a sleep mask over their eyes. Or they turn on a light by their bed.
Simple. They know how to handle it. You need to learn how to handle it without flying off it.
Sooooo..... what happens when your dreams consists of daytime scenarios? Inquiring minds want too know.
I'm sure Bill likes the lights out. LOL
BULL HOCKEY on steroids.
Where was the funding for this research given from? These “expert researchers” are wedded to the teat of government grants—aka taxpayers.
Some people are just light sleepers.
