The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Same for us! SW corner of Wisconsin, Zone 5a. One more frigid night, then the temps take off like a rocket.
FINALLY! Daylight Savings is going to help my spirit a LOT this weekend! :)
Peppers are started inside. Tomatoes this weekend, inside. The unheated greenhouse has lettuces, kale & spinach planted, but just sitting due to this cold snap. They should perk right up next week. I have 6 buckets of Tulips and Daffs that I’m forcing early, so I’m waiting on those, too.
You are right on top of me :)
We’re a day behind but starting Monday, WHOO HOO!!!!
Soon as the snow is melted, it’s out in the garden to set up my potato and carrot containers set up and get them started.
My onions are up nicely and so is the cabbage and radicchio.
Today I plan on starting Romaine and peppers , and some flowers.
I want to try celery but could use some advice on growing that in this climate.
I grow most of the items on the list. Peaches and figs are out of the question in zone 4. On the other hand, I get loads of production of red currants and plums. I ate both of those today from last year's harvest.
Coffee weather for sure, NOT gardening weather!
34 degrees currently (10 am). Forecast on my weather app (somewhat accurate most of the time) is for “heavy rain (with a chance of 1-4 in. of snow) in the morning & afternoon.”
We had a big T-storm around 5:30 this morning that woke me up - lightning flashes & big thunder rumbles as the ‘weather’ came in.
The wind was really gusting this morning around 8 am, but I think it has quieted down. Tomorrow night, the temp is supposed to be a low of 16 degrees!
The trees are coming out with tiny little leaves ... red on the maples & green on the crape myrtles. One of the redbuds, the one that is always the earliest to do anything (we have 5) is looking a little red/dark pink along the branches. I’m thinking the 16 degrees might kill those little blooms - it’s happened before.
My seed order has been confirmed [Dragon Egg & Diva cukes, Dazzling Blue Kale] - waiting for the email to tell me they’ve shipped. I’ve had 2 offers of help to plant them, but my brother says once I’m “fixed” (knee) & with a brace, I’ll be able to do it myself - I hope so! Last frost used to be mid-May, but since we’ve had warmer winters & what seems to be earlier springs, I’ve got a month to a month & a half to get healed up & back into gardening shape.
Latest on the fox - the neighbor was jogging on a nearby road & spotted a (the?) fox .... I do not think they’re denning under our barn this year & that would be a ‘good’ thing.
Coffee, college basketball tournaments*, some knitting, watching the weather ... rain, maybe snow (raining now). It’s going to be a “laid back” Saturday.
*the college alma mater (Virginia Tech) of my dad, both brothers & 5 of my 6 nieces/nephews is in the ACC Tournament Championship tonight - first time in the school’s history to play in the Championship game. They’ve scored big upsets the last 2 games. They play Duke/Coach K tonight -if they win against Duke, it will be a miracle, but anybody can beat anybody on any given day. :-)
Foot plus of snow today. Ugggh. Gonna be warm next week though, so,spring right aroudnmthe corner. Can’t waitmfor, wait for, first toasted tomato sandwich (cucumber sandwiches good too loaded with pepper and mayo)
Gooseberries are good too, especially made into, juice.
Hi...that pic of strawberries in planter that u posted: I purchased one three days ago at Lowes. My temp tonight will be 11 degrees. You think it will survive that cold PLUS wind?
I love strawberries but have never try to grow them.
Worked on my plan for what will go in what pot this year:
Sage and French thyme (both should return from last year)
Chive and tarragon (first chive harvest should be soon!)
Mustard and chard
Lavender and mint (both already showing they are ready for summer)
Genovese Basil and marjoram
Oregano, rosemary and Greek basil
Parsley, lemon verbena ( I have good cuttings from last year) and lemon thyme (already growing!)
Dill and Nasturtium
Johnny jumpups
Got seed starters going for dill, mustard and nasturtium. Going to try a low risk pot of seeding rosemary. My indoor parsley plant is huge. I should be able to transplant it outside soon!
Low was 11 degrees here this morning.
We heat with wood only and so the temp can vary in this thin drafty place. I’m starting seeds right now and have a heat mat and another on the way and I also bought a temp controller since without it, they just add 10-20 degrees to the ambient. I have it set for 74 degrees but it’s not quite keeping up. The soil in the tray was 60 degrees this morning.
Good thing they’re hardy plants. I’m going to try putting a few layers of corrugated cardboard under the heat mat and maybe cardboard on three sides since it’s near a crappy window.
I've never had gooseberries. I mostly stick to herbal teas to drink.
Great!
Too cold in much of the country to do much gardening. Lucky for me my planted potatoes and peas haven’t come up yet, and tonight’s low in South Alabama is 23 degrees!
Then it gets back into the mid-70s. Hopefully, not colder again until late November.
