A new meta-analysis by researchers adds to evidence that taller adults may be more likely than shorter ones to develop colorectal cancer or colon polyps that can later become malignant. While the association between taller height and colorectal cancer has been previously investigated, the researchers say those studies offered conflicting results, carried inconsistent measures of height and failed to include the risk of adenomas, which are precancerous colon polyps.
"This is the largest study of its kind to date. It builds on evidence that taller height is an overlooked risk factor, and should be considered when evaluating and recommending patients for colorectal cancer screenings," says Gerard Mullin, MD. He and his team cautioned that the study does not prove causal effect, or that taller stature is as dominant a risk factor as age or genetics. However, the study strengthens long-observed links between taller stature and colorectal cancer risk.
"One possible reason for this link is that adult height correlates with body organ size. More active proliferation in organs of taller people could increase the possibility of mutations leading to malignant transformation," says Elinor Zhou, M.D., co-first author of the published study report.
Because the definition of tallness is different around the world, the Johns Hopkins team compared the highest versus the lowest height percentile of various study groups. "The findings suggest that, overall, the tallest individuals within the highest percentile of height had a 24% higher risk of developing colorectal cancer than the shortest within the lowest percentile. Every 10-centimeter increase (about 4 inches) in height was found to be associated with a 14% increased risk of developing colorectal cancer and 6% increased odds of having adenomas," says Mullin.

Good advice. I had one colon polyp removed 10 years ago.
Get stool DNA testing. It is much safer. And cheaper.
And, polyps don’t mean squat unless they are cancerous. In fact, there is a lot of evidence that polyps are removed because of the differential medicare and insurance reimbursement rates.
Is it because their rectums are closer to the sun and gets more rays?
I will get mine in prison.
I used to work with a really tall man, who was also very muscular. My head wasn’t much higher up than his belt buckle, when I stood beside him.
(I always felt very safe and nice, standing beside him...)

A short ass like Putin doesn’t have to worry.
I have had numerous colonoscopies since 1994, I lost track of how many. Scheduled to have another next month. I have had numerous polyps removed in that time span, one two years ago was over an inch in diameter, and it was pre-cancerous.
I am 5’4” tall. I’m a shorty by US standards.
I just GOTTA be different!🙄
Wow, bless you! Live long and prosper!👍
Exactly right. Polyps are harmless protrusions in bowels unless they become cancerous due to slow bowel movements from eating too much meat. Carnivore animals have very short intestines which avoid getting constipated on all meat diet. Herbivores have longer intestines to digest vegetable matter which is harder to digest. Human intestines are closer to herbivores in length.
If your over the counter test detects possible cancer, you will still need a colonoscopy to take biopsies and possibly remove the culprit.
Colonoscopies are still the gold standard where they can visually see the questionable areas, remove tissue samples, and if need be, return to the site and take the next best course of action.
Follow the prep instructions-the prep is the worst part-and the rest is easy.
Yep, the more intestines you have, the better the chance something will go wrong. The same is true of the circulatory systems. And a person who drives 50,000 miles a year will likely have more car problems than a person who drives 10,000 miles a year.
You compared Nigerians to Pygmies.
Did you mean the Watusi tribe?
Many of those individuals grow over 7 feet.
A short ass like Putin doesn’t have to worry.
Taller people are at a HIGHER risk of everything- thanks, im here all week
But I once heard it all over the radio that short people have no reason to live.
Is there an upper age limit for colonoscopies?
Asking for myself.
I’m 6’3” and my wife of 35 years is 5’3”. For some reason I can’t remember ever dating a woman over 5’6”.
Oh, gee, lucky me. At 6'3", I must be a ticking time bomb. But I am due for a colonoscopy this year, so that's good.
USA - Males - 4.3% or 1 person in 23
USA - Females - 4.0% or 1 person in 25
Also of note...
Studies vary, but the risk of a medical complication from one colonoscopy is usually stated at 1%-2%.
Bottom line - if you do not have major risk factors - like smoking, heavy alcohol use, significant fatty or processed meat consumption, lack of exercise (like walking and standing), or a family history - your risk for colorectal cancer is about 2%, regardless of gender.
My diagnostic choice - I will wait for a blood test or some kind of non-invasive, non-radioactive, soft tissue image scan.
Already happened.
Several years ago, this same kind of data crunching showed that tall white males have a higher risk for melanoma skin cancer.
Correlation or Causation?
Jury is still out.
