Seceded state about to be reacquired by the Union. Which side should we root for?

“Flagellating....” :-)
Not really. Secession might be suggested today to the minds of God-fearing moral people as a solution to the ongoing social crisis. Such folks are critical to a conservative future in America. Is there a moral alternative for them beside submitting to Democrat tyranny?

That equine quadraped is diseased not yet deceased.

It is not even comparable. Ukraine has been independent for over 30 years.

So you are saying that Russia could have invaded Ukraine a month or so after it became independent, and that would be okay?

Am I to understand that you mean Independence is only a right if you have it for some particular amount of time?

No, these items are the misapplication of the 14th Amendment, and if the 14th didn't exist, they would have be created by some other judicial fiat.

Have you read the 14th amendment? The first part is mostly okay, though it does have some serious problems too, but the remaining portion is utterly mucked up. It pretty much establishes the "incorporation doctrine" and leaves it up to the courts to define anything any which way they wish to define it.

It transfers far too much power to the Federal courts, and it creates the legal underpinnings for their abuse of original intent.

The intent of the 14th may be laudable, but the way it is written just begs for abuse by the all powerful Federal authorities.

To common sense people, the 14th never meant to create any of that crap, but unfortunately the Federal courts disagree.

The day is coming that God will crush Magog/Russia...and the armies of Gog will fight each other. The blood will rise to the horses bridle.

Nope, it’s neither.

Well probably not to you, because it doesn't support what you wish to believe. Indeed, it mocks your thinking regarding what was done to the Southern states.

It puts you on the horns of a dilemma in which you have to condemn One tyrant for invading another country that wanted independence, while defending another tyrant that invaded another country that wanted independence.

And it does this in a way that makes the dichotomy amusing to people who don't have to defend it.

:)

Nope, from Belarus. Air invasion is now at Kiev Airport. They’re going after the leadership. This will be over in short order. The Ukrainians are not willing to fight for their country, why should we?

Spoken like a man who never thought deeply about the history of his own country. Lincoln famously said that he would preserve the union with slavery if he could. In other words he would’ve allowed slavery to continue if the south would simply return to the union peacefully. This is your hero, not mine.

Lincoln called for the passage of the "Corwin Amendment". (in his first inaugural address.) This amendment would have made slavery permanent in the US.

His concern was not slavery, it was loss of economic control over the Southern states which were producing approximately 72% of all the revenues for the government at that time.

Even worse, the loss of control over the trade of the Southern states would have economically devastated his powerful wealthy supporters in the Northeast.

As you recall, my sole focus in these discussions is the reality that Southern secession was motivated entirely by the issue of slavery, which of course doesn’t support what you wish to believe. So your waste of bandwidth for a stupid vanity is another epic fail.

Right. Kansas’ admission to the union was what triggered the war. Not Arizona, not New Mexico. Kansas. And California’s central valley relies on immigration to provide CONSISTENT water supply, but that doesn’t mean they can produce nothing without immigration. The fact that their income would swing wildly depending on drought years and prosperous years only tips the balance ever moreso towards slave agriculture. And then there’s Washington, Oregon, Nebraska...

No, I am saying that the situation is different. Ukraine and breakaway republics are more comparable to Northern and Southern states than Russia and Ukraine. You didn’t even address that point.

Given that Russia wants to prevent Ukraine from entering NATO, the situation is more analogous to the US invading Cuba under the Monroe Doctrine.

The 14th amendment, like the 2nd amendment, has been perverted to mean something different than what the authors intended. You can argue if it is poorly written, but it doesn’t change the original intent.

My biggest fear is Biden sending US troops in to show how tough he is, without UN sanction or assistance against a real world power, with real world nukes, who may not be afraid to use them.

I worry about that too. That stolen election will likely result in massive bloodshed worldwide.

Taiwan is likely the next shoe to drop.

Everyone involved in that stolen election, and most especially the gutless Republicans who failed to stand up in opposition to it, deserve to be running in fear of their lives if the public ever wakes up to what they have done.

The west currently is embodied with the likes of the bidEn crime family, with ties to Ukraine.

I cannot help but think that the current situation is a consequence of the Biden crime family.

Not when Hunter also has massive interests in Russia.

I should not be surprised to learn that the Biden crime family has deeper responsibilities for this mess than we know.

I’m saying that the Civil War has been debated endlessly on FR.

Whether or not secession is a right of the each state in the US needs to be argued on its own merits. What is going on in Europe is immaterial to that argument, and what has happened in the past sets precedent, but is not 100% binding on future decisions.

I believe that which is freely joined has the right to freely un-join, particularly for States of the United States. That said, I am not familiar enough with Ukraine to determine if that ‘original joining’ was indeed free or not.

It was not. Stalin starved to death about 20 million Ukrainians in something they call the "Holodomor."

In any case, this is not my dog, not my hunt. I suggest we send Cackles back in there for another try and see if she can think up something even more stupid than her last try.

Piece of sh*t Bill Clinton promised the US would protect Ukraine if it gave up nuclear weapons located within it's borders.

I consider the word of Bill Clinton to be absolute garbage, and the nation was a fool to ever let that fecal material into the white house.

But what are we supposed to do about promises made by our country's "leadership"?

I feel for Ukraine, but do I feel strongly enough that I want American soldiers fighting Russians?

No.

From another perspective, is Putin the next Hitler? Is this appeasement? Will we have to fight him with less favorable odds later down the road?

Are we making a Neville Chamberlain mistake here?

Hard to say. If all Putin wants are these two regions and stops there, I don’t see too much danger. But if this turns into a total takeover, someone needs to step in. Another perspective is just see who the American media wants and go the other way. If Russia gets what they want and I don’t see how they won’t if it’s just them and Ukraine fighting, it would be nice if somehow they can expose Ukraine as the money laundering capitol of the world. Maybe something good can come from this.

Is this a Neville Chamberlain moment?

I don't want us in this, but is this tactic "penny wise and dollar foolish"?
