With ‘bodies piling up,’ contractors clearing backlog at Maryland medical examiner’s office for $850 an autopsy

A yearslong staffing crisis in the state medical examiner’s office in Baltimore is leading to unprecedented delays in autopsies, an emergency request to federal officials for help and now a legislative push for more workers. To deal with “bodies piling up,” one lawmaker said the statewide agency that investigates sudden and unexpected deaths has turned to a ready source of labor — contractors “flown in from out of state” and recent retirees earning $850 per autopsy. State officials say that labor pool is vital to clearing cases. But lawmakers and union representatives deride the vacant positions across state government generally and say excessive use of contractors may be particularly wasteful and morale-busting in the medical examiner’s office.

Derp. You can only refrigerate bodies for so long before they start to decompose. There ain't enough Vick's vapor rub to smear around my nose or a mask thick enough......But, it's Maryland. I'm surprised their solution isn't just to bulldoze them into long trenches, cover them with lime, plow it over, and give a freakishly lame mea culpa to the media.

This is Baltimore. How long does it take per body to see if it was a fatal gunshot or stabbing? If neither then a drug overdose. Next body...

“earning $850 per autopsy”

And a $100 bonus if it’s COVID.

They’re implying it’s Covid, I’m sure. Like that’s the only thing killing ppl these days, even in Maryland.

“an emergency request to federal officials for help”

I guess federalism is dead. Why do cities appeal directly to the feds and not the county or state?

This sounds like something from a Patricia Cornwell novel.
She writes stories about a fictional character who is a Medical examiner.

Baltimore is already a cesspool of filth, just put them on the Street and sidewalks, I doubt anyone would notice.

Yeah, it’s Ballmer. Nobody would notice a stray dog walking down an alley with a femur in his jaws. LOL It’s not safe anywhere in that pool of filth. Back in the day, I could visit my retired aunt and uncle there and not worry about locking my car doors. Used to take dates to Inner Harbor, eat around Little Italy and Fells Point........those were better and safer times. Regardless of what’s happened to it, I’ll always carry good memories of my time there.

Lemme gas up the Poulan, and I’ll give you a beautiful bisection for $100, flat fee. You dig through the guts afterwards.

FTA: "They also are working on permanent cold storage, as Reznik said bodies were stored in hallways before they were moved to a temporary facility in a garage."

Just imagine the smell when they are stored in hallways.

I have a friend, a veteran, who is being affected by this. It was bad enough that he found his 36-year-old vaccinated daughter dead in her home, leaving an elementary-age child. But now this.
